Don't really want to take up the space in my bag for "shoe" shoes. Can you make it w/ flip flops? I have a pair of old Rainbows that are super comfy - I've worn them everywhere.

Thanks!

I recommend something more sturdy than flip flops because there are some old rotting leaves on the trail. I recommend sneakers and at the very least, wear Tevas or more sturdy gear. It's a great trail! Easy on the way down but quite a work out on the way up!

I've done this trail quite a few times and I did it in flip-flops no problem. I've also done it in a pair of keen sandals and they were fine too! It's definately a trail with lots of leaves, down branches, loose dirt and small rocks but I found it to be quite easy in both shoes I've worn.

Pack in some sneakers! Poster jill may have come here during VERY dry season and survived very well but that's not the norm where any hiking is concerned. Wear your sneakers well when you hike and also spray "OFF on your body...

Check out today's post on On St. John website, which includes a video of the trail.

I guess I'll have to break down and pack some sneakers! Thanks for the advice everyone! We'll be on STJ next month 2/12- 2/21 for my husbands 30th bday - I absolutely cannot wait. I hate winter even though they are relatively mild here in TN (not really, I grew up in San Diego) - I so look forward to our little break of Caribbean warm weather. This will be our 3rd trip in a little over a year - we're addicted.

Go shopping for a nice pair of sandals like Keen or Teva that can double as beach shoes.

katiehf,

STT Resident gave you some very good advice about bug spray. I have walked the trail on three occasions and all three times needed bug repellant. The no seeums are wicked!

Here's another vote for sneakers.

Reef Bay is a great trail. Enjoy!

By the sounds of it the vote is for sneakers which I certainly agree with. One word of advise, take twice as much water as you think you are going to need. Especially if you are not used to a work out in the tropics. It is a very nice trail but you will need to keep hydrated.

Sneakers, you don't have to pack them. Wear them down on the plane.

We were on St. John last week. We wore light hiking shoes down on the plane. We hiked Lind Point to Margaret Hill and finished off with Caneel Hill. We started out with a beautiful day and ended up hiking down Caneel Hill in a long long down pour. The trail turned to a small stream, I was glad that I had good shoes. Enjoy! We did.
