My traveling companion has a totlaly bizarre and rediculous fear of geckos .. trips to Tahiti (her favorite spot on earth) have been occassionally damped by these fears - mainly of them in the bedroom at night eating bugs as they do. We will arrive on Water Island Saturday for a 10 day adventure ... any suggestions for warding off these little creatures from the bedroom at night???? To her credit, my friend is normally a very hearty person whose is not bothered by much - this is just one of those irrational things.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Therapy may help, LOL! I actually have one in my bedroom, he comes out at night. Scampers across the walls....Only thing to do is keep the doors closed and hope one doesn't sneek in. The problem is that they are everywhere!

No seriously .. therapy has been discussed cause she has such a bizarre reaction - and the woman grew up in Jamaica! Perhaps her older brothers tormented her with then when she was younger ...

Put an iguana on her bed while she's sleeping. Then wake her up. I guarantee you she'll think nothing of geckos after that.

Hello Moptop,

Keep doors close, particular doors close to outdoor lights in the evening... geckos are drawn not to the light but to the bugs that are drawn to light. If you find a gecko in the house/villa, assuming you are not afraid of them, catch it with your hand and put it outside...

Good Luck.

If the windows are left open, be sure to check the screens for holes, and make sure there are no gaps around the frames. If the entire place is well sealed, almost nothing other than small ants can get in.

Richard, Thanks for making me spit my drink on the keyboard. It was the first good laugh I've had in a couple of weeks. 🙂

Moptop, I understand your concern. Allthough my wife does'nt have a problem with geckos she Freaks Out at the sight or even mention of a palmetto bug.

We've been to St. Thomas many times and have not seen more than a couple of geckos in the condo in all of our stayes.
Make sure that the doors to the outside have no gap between the bottom and the floor and I really think you'll be ok. If there is maybe place a towel down to block their way. The ones we entertained always came in through that gap. One of them even tried to sell me auto insurance. LOL (some will get that)

Hey Bill,

There is good news...I switched my car insurance...and now save a lot of money! I hate/love those commercials! We do have that insurance by the way and we do like it!

As far as Geckos go, in Hawaii - if you find a gecko/geckos in your home, it is considered a blessing on your home. They are good luck to many. I am getting a gecko tattoo - so I guess I can not relate. I wish your friend luck, we went on vacation to STT and never saw one, however I am afraid of those iguanas. The long claws, the beady little eyes, the scary mouth, but then I learned that they were vegetarians. That made me feel better.

I hope your vacation goes well!

Ditto to what they said about sealing the joint up.

While I had no problem with geckos when I lived there, the very idea of a gongalo falling off the ceiling and onto my bed was enough to make my blood run cold. ICCCCKKKK!!!
Same goes for walking out of my bedroom door and stepping on a coqui. FREAKS ME OUT!

I bet while the iguana would quell her fear of geckos forever, that could be opening up a larger can of worms than intended.....good thought, though! LOL
