I've been scouring the message board, but can't find the answers to two of my more pressing questions:

1. Can anyone please help me figure out if we would be better off taking the Red Hook ferry or the Charlotte Amalie ferry to St. John from the airport? I think I read on another post that it will take about 45 mins to get to Red Hook from the airport and cost two of us about $25-$30 for the taxi, but I wasn't able to find much info about the CA ferry...

2. We're trying to do some scuba diving while we're on the island - we're both certified and want to make sure we go with a good dive outfit. Our definition of good is one that doesn't over-crowd their trips, and whose divemasters are knowledgeable. I've already spoken to someone at Low Key Watersports, and that's which way we're leaning now - can anyone offer any advice? I'd also love it if we could get some advice on good dive sites.

Thank you for your help!

Haven't used her personally as I'm not a scuba diver but I have heard nothing but good things about Colette at 6-paq scuba. Her website is http://www.6paqscuba.com/. Good luck!

1. I would vote for the CA ferry bc I'd rather be on the water seeing the sites than getting slung around in a cab going up and over the mountain or fighting the traffic toRed Hook. I've done both several times. CA ferry is never crowded and is a big boat.
2. I dived with Low Key several times and their trips are low volume and friendly. I would recommend them altho they're the only group I have used on St John so can't compare them to the others. Their store also sells good selection of T shirts.

I've hit Red Hook once and it was crazy. Not worth the shorter trip. Besides, the 45 minute trip from CA means a little time to relax and adjust to island time as you sit and watch St Thomas go by while you marvel at the blue waters.

It may be worth mentioned however, that the ferry schedules are (or at least were as of Nov) way more frequent at Red Hook. When we were there in Nov the CA ferry wasn't running more than a couple of times a day so I would vote taking the van to Red Hook rather than wait hours maybe for the next CA ferry. STT doesn't do that much for me and I think I'd just sit in bar and drink too much and I'd rather be on STJ sooner than later. But check the current CA ferry schedule, maybe its more frequent now.

I've always taken the ferry from Red Hook, but am rethinking it myself. I just want to get onto STJ asap, so does anyone have any comments about that? My flight lands (barring any delays, ha ha) at 2:35... would I be able to make the 3:00 ferry from CA? How far is CA from the airport?

crickett : )

The Chris Sawyer Wreck of the Rhone trip on Fridays is one of the great dive experiences. They will pick you up at the Park Dock, take you through Customs in West End. Usually Chris picks up some johnny cake or other munchie. The trip over to Salt includes the story of the Rhone and the hurricane that destroyed her. Two dives with a lunch break in between. If you are smart, you'll bring a 6 pack (cooler is provided)for the ride back. If you're nice, you'll share with your new dive buddies!

Keep in mind the taxis charge per person, not per trip. It isn't like in the states where the first person pays the rate and each additional passenger pays a small fee. Everyone in the taxi pays the same. It doesn't matter if you're the only person in it or if you have 10 others with you. Same rate. Therefore, it will probably be less expensive to take the CA ferry, but more options to take the Red Hook Ferry.

Newbie where are you staying STT or STJ. Do you have passports? You may want to try 6paQ and Low Key. I would not forget about Coki Beach dive club either. If you click search at the top, then type in scuba diving and click All dates youwill see some interesting posts.

We're staying on St. John, and yes, we'll be bringing our passports. Thanks for the tip on searching the board - I'll definitely do that. I appreciate everyone's input - can't wait to be on the island and get underwater 🙂

Is there any public transportation that I could take from the airport to Red Hook?

Thanks.

christiepop,

There are always plenty of taxis at the airport, just outside the luggage area; just tell them you want to go to Red Hook and they'll tell you which taxi to board.

I appreciate that, but I was wondering about public transport because that is the way I get around everywhere at home and on vacations. I just kinda like to take public transport, if it's available.

Thanks again.

christiepop,

Taxis are public transport here. The taxis here are not individual yellow cab style vehicles but passenger vans and like a bus, you will travel between the airport and Red Hook with others.

I have done dives with both Low Key and 6paq. Both are excellent. Never had a problem taking the Red Hook ferry...it does depend on the schedule of RH v. CA.
