Hello,

My husband and I are heading to St. Thomas in May to celebrate our anniversary - we are very excited and I have been reading all the suggestions everyone has been giving. Thanks!!

We are renting a condo on Sapphire Beach. My question is (my first),,,I had read a month or so ago that there is not a large selection of restaurants in this area. Am I mistaken? Please share some of your favorites. We love fine dining, but I think we prefer the more local foods and atmosphere, so all suggestions are welcome. We would love to try conch and anything else new!

Next question - do you think we should rent a car - we are on the fence.

Thanks so much!!

Rent-a-Car = YES

There are soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many good places to eat it would be hard to start...
You will not go hungry
Roberts for fine dining
Lattiude 18 on open mic night for fun

I would recommend one evening catching the ferry to STJ for dinner and sunset
have a few drinks and then enjoy looking at the stars on the way home...

Life is good....

How do you drive a car if you are on a fence?? *-)

My very favorite conch is at Cuzzin's downtown. They have the magic touch!

Try the Grapevine Grill at Sapphire Village. In Red Hook- fancier: East End Cafe, The Cellar, Off the Hook. Casual and fun: Molly Molone's. Nouveau sushi: Lotus.

OMG, conch chowder at Molly Malone's...so tender, so delicious, so filling, just get the terrific onion rings after that and share a burger!!! Agave Terrace for a nice night out, Bolongo Beach Buffet on Wed for Caribbean fare (delicious) plus carved roast beef and pork with a show and music to boot! Can't go wrong!

Definitely get a car!!!! Taxis charge per destination PER PERSON...too pricey!

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions,,,,,,I am writing them all down to try out. We only have a week (which I am afraid we will regretnot having longer) and I am going to try and hit most of these places!! Thanks again!

P.S. We have decided to get a car based on your suggestions.

I really like the laid back feeling of Lattitude 18. I thought their dinner was really good. It's right on the water and just a nice relaxing feel to it.

Molly Mallones. Also pretty laid back. There Chef Salad was HUGE. Of course it costs alot more then here, but we had lunch with it the next day and still had left overs.

Duffy's Love Shack. Kind of strange place because of how it sits smack dab in a parking lot, but we've been happy with their food. One word of warning...unless you want the tacky glasses they serve you drinks in, ask for plastic. Costs less too.

Marina Market. They make good sandwiches. They're across from the ferry terminal, so it's convenient.

Fungi's....I loved the view, was not impressed with the food. I'd go there and maybe have some drinks and an appetizer again, but that's about it.

Agave...we loved it. Expensive, beautiful view.

For happy hour, the Grapevine Grille has a good deal in Sapphire Village. 1/2 price drinks and appetizers and they have 2 happy hours. Something like 4-6 and then 7-9.

That should keep you busy.

Benny,

All of the places mentioned are excellent. The Caribbean Saloon was as much fun as it looks, food excellent. After dinner we decided to have a nightcap at Duffy's. In honor of Beer Hunter (one of my favorite posters on this board, he's so sweet and funny), we thought we'd try out the Shark Tank, what a riot! The lights go blue, they play the impending shark tune from Jaw's, and the bar is filled up with fog as they serve you your fish tank full of blue booze and a plastic shark that is filled up with a medley of liquers. Heck, I wasn't driving although my head did hurt a little the next morning. It did take all four of us to put a dent in it.

I'll see if I can find Beer Hunter's trip report and give it a bump, his pictures are excellent and his commentary will have you rolling with laughter.

If you don't try the dinner specials at Toad and Tart on Smith Bay road you will have missed out on some really good dining.

The original poster asked about any restaurants " in the area" as she was staying at Sapphire. They would have to turn R exiting Sapphire not L . --Toad and Tart is not in Red Hook // Re: the topic -- sorry just reading the query

Benny, I really think you should rent a car. If you want to stay at Sapphire and just hang on the beach, that's fine, but if you plan on going out to eat, cab fares can add up fast. There's also so much to do on STT and places to see, that a car is necessary.

Even if you were to venture out to Coki Beach and that area, a car is necessary, you can't walk.

Romano's in Smith Bay is an excellent choice for great Italian food. It can get a little pricey, dinner for two ran us about $280.00, although more than half of the bill was for excellent wine. It is the white building on your right as you head to Coki Beach on Coki Road.

Thanks,,,all ideas are welcome,,,since we will be getting a car, I am hoping to be all over the island. Toad and Tart - what an interesting name - is this a roadside stand, a walk in restaurant, a bar and grill, LOL - I want to go just because of the name!!

The Toad and Tart is a small restaurant west of Red Hook on Smith Bay Road you will find it on the left hand side just past the entrance to Fungi's. I believe it is owned by a husband an wife team, I also believe that she is British (please correct me if I'm wrong). A small but delightful menu. I've also had their prime rib and would have to agree that it is excellent.

The only owner is the Tart. A very hospitable one at that. The place doesn't look like much from the outside but the inside is very nice in a Brit sort of way. The food is verrry good and reasonably priced. If you want to rub elbows with the locals, this is the place. They know the good spots.
