I'll be coming to STT Saturday - 6/25 - and have heard that there's construction on the parking lot for the ferry in Red Hook and it's very difficult to get to the ferry right now, and you have to walk a long distance after parking. How much of this is true? How close is Sapphire Beach to Red Hook? (why does this message make me sound like a third grader - I'm a law student.)

I can't comment on the construction because I haven't yet seen it. But, I thought folks were using the parking lot under the little shopping center in Red Hook - which means you would have to walk about 1.5 short blocks to reach the ferry. Or, as has always been done, people will park on the road outside of the ferry parking lot entrance.

Sapphire is about a 10-15 minute walk - no sidewalk - so you're walking in the road and alongside the brush.

Thay have made a satellite parking area which would be a long walk away as equal to the walk to Sapphire. They do have a shuttle to run folks back and forth. However, it seems that folks are still parking on the side of the road which I belive may end pretty soon!

Most people still seem to be parking along the road as always. Very few are using the new parking lot just west of the HS.

Construction does NOT interfere with the operation of the ferries.

Hello Carolmo,

August 2005 is what I had read on the Port Authority web site, with a begin date of August 2004. I believe they got going on the construction in January 2005 though... so that's a four month delay. So I'd push the end date back 4 months and maybe add a couple weeks/months for 'island time' :).

Hey Islander,

Thanks for the info. We will be down in November and I was hoping it would be done by then, but probably not. Good to know about it ahead of time and be prepared for a little more congestion. Thanks again!
