I think credit should be given to all emergency response teams, VI Govt., police, firefighters, EMS, News(TV and Radio) in informing everyone to prepare for Omar. Thankfully, most of in St. Thomas were very lucky and only hope the best for St. Croix and their recovery.
Yes, things have got better in many respects. The forewarnings and projections are much better now than they were when Hugo and Marilyn hit in years past. But the best hurricane trajectories remain untrustworthy as even a slight shift can mean a huge difference. When you're advised of a hurricane warning you need to batten down, period and take every precaution whether you be a boat owner or a homeowner.
I don't fully understand right now why the seasoned boaters on STX didn't move their vessels to safer havens. It's possible that the majority wasn't here for either Hugo or Marilyn and, having maybe experienced just a few minor blows which amounted to pretty much nothing, became a bit complacent.
I have no doubt that many boat-owners on STX did the same as those on STT did, as in move their boats to safe havens. Those who didn't suffered and lost. Cheers!
Because they were STUPID! They are saying that they didn't expect a cat 3 -- but isn't that the point of warnings, to prepare for the worst? And many of these folks should have known better, they've been around long enough.
I know on STT and STJ there are a few places where boaters move to that are considered less dangerous during a hurricane -- does STX have any geographical features that give boaters any protection? Very few docks in STT allow boats to remain in slips for storms. Because of the direction Omar came from would it even have been possible to move from STX to Culebra or Vieques safely?
Where are the safest places to put your STX based vessels? Thanks.
We have 2 marinas, Salt River and Green Cay that are extremely safe. Boaters also have the option of having thier boat hauled out of the water and stored at St. Croix Marina. Most of our owners moved their boats into secure areas. I don't know what the others were thinking.
Thanks for the updates. How did the yacht club make out? Thanks for the info -
