We are looking for recommendations on accommodations in St. John. We have never been, and are looking for something quiet and close to a peaceful beach and walking/hiking trails.

This all depends on what you want to spend and what kind of traveling you prefer. If you want to go the eco-tourism route, Maho's higher-end cabins are nice. They have lots of trails, beach access, watersports and a great relationship with the national park, meaning lots of educational hikes and lectures. If you prefer to be pampered a little more, but still love the nature, Caneel Bay is a great option. The rooms are beautiful (garden rooms are some of the best at cheaper prices), the property fun to explore and the beaches are long and white. If you prefer nightlife, Gallows Point near Cruz Bay (the biggest town on St. John) is a great option. You can have privacy on premises if you want, or you can easily walk to town and shop, have drinks, eat or listen to live music. With the national park so close, hiking trails can easily be found no matter where you stay.

Thank you for all of the options. I will check out Mayo Bay and Caneel Bay. They both sound like great options for us. Thanks again.

You may want to check out staying in a villa too. There are tons of reputable rental companies out there. We've had especially great service with www.caribbeanvilla.com and here are some more to take a look at: www.cateredto.com www.vivacations.com www.destinationstjohn.com There's nothing quite like having your own kitchen for eating some meals "in" and your own private pool. If you are travelling with others, it can be very economical to rent a villa also.
