Hello everyone. Someone suggested on another thread that a hike to Ram's Head in the Full Moon can be fun. I found similar info elsewhere, but cautions about being very careful in the dark. Has anyone done this...is this particularly treacherous? "Fall off a cliff" level danger? Frankly loose rocks on the trail don't bother me since we can bring flashlights and be careful. Snakes bother me. Really big lizards that run up my leg bother me. I could probably get over it if the view was outstanding. Would Teva sandals be adequate for this kind of thing, or something you shouldn't attempt without sturdy hiking shoes?
Thanks in advance for any info!
For a night hike I would recommend a sturdy shoe. There are lots of low-growing cactus along the trail. If you're not constantly looking down at the trail, it would be very easy to step on or kick a cactus, & who wants to be looking at the ground? The point is to enjoy the moon-lit sceanery. There are some steep drop-offs, but I think with the moonlight & a flashlight you should be o.k. Enjoy it, but be careful!
The National Park Service had a guided full moon hike last month, I don't know if they do it every month. I don't remember any perilous cliffs when I hiked this trail 5 yrs ago. I did all my hiking on this years trip in tevas, but would recommend sneakers if you're hiking at night. The park recommends hiking boots, long pants, these are NOT necessary.
Slightly off topic, but how far is it from the start of Ram's Head to Salt Pond? We want to do this next time we're on island, and want to be prepared for the hike.
Thanks!
For VILover
I think it is a half mile or a bit more, the trail runs along Salt Pond Bay (on the left side as you face out into the bay). The salt pond itself is also to the left of the bay.
No snakes on island 🙂
Start before moon rise (in the light) so as to get the full effect, so it would only be back down in the dark and you would already be alittle familiar with the trail. Make sure you have flashlights and spray well with bug spray (that's why the park recommends long pants) and you will be fine.
Have fun
Pia
Excellent....no snakes! Thanks for the info. That's a shame about the sturdy shoes, since I am trying to pack light (gazillion steps to drag bags at Maho, as I understand it). Anyway, no problem, and better to know in advance and I don't want cactus parts in my toes. It sounds like it will be fun.
Thanks all!
