Is the Ram Head hike an easy, moderate or difficult one and is it a good place to hike to for a sunset or sunrise? If not, any insight into a good and somewhat quiet place for a good sunset and/or sunrise would be much appreciated. We leave in less than 48 hours! 🙂

It really depends on your level of fitness. For me, it was a moderate hike, but I'm 52, only weigh 150 lbs (kinda skinny for an old fart), and spent 2 weeks last summer backpacking in the Rocky Mountains, at altitudes of 12,000 feet carrying a 50 pound pack. The trail itself is narrow, rocky, and rugged. There are many areas of loose rocks and lots of cactus plants with sharp thorns. I hiked the trail from Concordia and it took my wife (who walks several miles a day every day)and I about 3.5 hours round trip. I wore shorts and a t-shirt and carried 2 Nalgene bottles of water, some granola bars, and a small first-aid kit in a small daypack. I wore New Balance all-terrain athletic shoes but I would have felt better with my Vibram-soled hiking boots. I would NOT advise hiking in the dark. There ARE areas that can be dangerous if you slip or trip, plus who wants to accidentally brush up against a cactus? If I were looking for an impressive sunset "location", I'd probably pick an easier-to-navigate beach

I think that 5Under may have heard of the full moon hikes to Rams Head. We heard people talk about them several times but we weren't there at the right time. Canoebase has described this trail perfectly. We wore regular sneakers (53 year old farts) which actually were fine but you do duck vines etc alot and you should be in pretty reasonable shape to do this (the heat gets to you).

Enjoy!!! You might want to pick up the Fins book (I forget the full title) while you're there if you don't have it already, I think it lists hikes. My guess is your accomodations may have a copy to borrow. I've only been on the Rams Head and the Reef Bay trails so I'm not much help

It's a great hike, but can be a bit tough. I imagine it would be neat doing it sunrise/sunset, but the footing can be a little tricky, so we usually shoot for early morning. It's a different view of the island, not your typical "caribbean" paradise. Very rocky, windy, stark, and the water is rough right at the end where it's whipped up by the winds. Watch the cactus! Besides, if done during the day, you get the beautiful colors of the water, and the pebble beach.
