Will be in STX in August. If I want to go into Christiansted to do some shopping by myself without my mate along, is it fairly safe? I understand I should be cautious, but would like to hear from the women out there. I'd probably take a taxi. Just want some opinions, please.

Also, how far is Christiansted from Tamarind Reef?

During the day you have nothing to fear in Christiansted.

After dark there still isn't much to fear as long as you stay in the shopping and restruant districts.

Take the same percautions you would take anywhere, ie. keep your purse in sight and zipped up. After dark don't take short cuts down dark alleys.

It is about 3-4 miles from the Tamarind Reef into town.

I'm going to St. Croix July 1st. Can anyone give me information on the Pig Roast Sunday July 4th at Mt. Victory Camp and also the Mango Melee the Botanical Gardens? How far are they from The Divi, what can I expect, and anything special going on , on the 4th? Would you suggest either one of these?

Okay, I'll respond as a woman! I stay right on the waterfront in Christiansted and feel completely safe shopping, wandering all day long. I've even ventured a little off the beaten path , in daylight of course. After dark I stay within the historic district (no reason to leave it on foot anyway) where all the restaurants and shops are.

I don't bother with a purse or fanny pack (seems awkward and kind of screams "tourist!"). I carry a tiny wallet in my pocket with ID, credit card, maybe $20, and keys attached. I do this for safety purposes - I'm not safe in stores if I have too much incentive to spend! Seriously, I really do it for convenience.

You'll be fine in Christiansted. Be sure to greet everyone you meet with "Good morning", "Good afternoon" or "Good evening". Enjoy!!!

Hello Polly,

The Pig Roast will be an outdoors bbq/roast at an eco-camp site. Wear bug repellent otherwise interesting/fun time. Mango Melee is a good event at the St. George's Botanical Garden in cooperation with I believe the University of the VI - St. Croix campus; good oppurtunity to try some local fruits and mingle with locals and in a nice place - the Gardens are worth visiting.

Have a good time.
