Greetings all -

quick question regarding the weather in January - we'll be visiting during the last 2 wks of the month. I'm assuming shorts and tank tops but does it get cooler at night, enought to take a jacket or maybe just a light sweater? its been really hard finding warm weather clothes out here at this time of year, so i'm hoping to pick up a few things once we get there.. we're staying in a villa close to bolongo bay i believe, i've read on the boards that there's a kmart on STT - does anyone know if its close by?

thanks!! can't wait for our vacation!! 🙂

let me start by saying that I am from wisconsin and don't feel the need for a jacket or anything other than shorts and a shirt at night, it feels so good to be able to wear shorts in the warmth. Depending on traffic the kmart isn't too far away from where your staying. I will also be down near the end of january, so good luck and enjoy your trip.

Well, I, too am from Wisconsin, and I am cold often! Although it was warm during the days, I did wear capri's and a light sweater in the evenings in January last year. Also, while snorkeling, I would wear a long sleeve rash guard because I found the water a bit chilly. I've also been on island in March and June and found it warmer then. I may just be weird (my husband would say this is highly likely!) but I always bring something to cover up with.

Either way, it beats this crummy weather in the midwest!!

Have a fun trip - we'll be on STJ at the end of January.

Thanks!! About the long sleeve rash guard, is that something we can pick up at Kmart as well?

One more thing, we're getting married while we're there (yay! LOL) Any suggestions about where I can purchase a simple white summer dress??

Kmart has swimwear and beach wear; not sure about rash guards. You could order a rash guard on-line.

Congrats on the wedding. 😉

There are a couple White House Black Market stores on island, they might have something. Actually they have a website so you could start there: http://www.whiteandblack.com/store/home.asp.

Hello Cyn,

Lots of beach days and water activities... Magens, Sapphire, Secret Harbor... check out the beach guide for St. Thomas on this site. (Scroll to the top of this page and click on St. Thomas for the drop down, Beach Guide is there.) Snorkeling on your own from the beach is good at Sapphire, Coki, Secret Harbor, Cowpet. Some of the beaches offer water-sports like kayak, paddle boats, windsurfing, jet skis, parasailing, diving. You can take a daysail charter or sunset sail. Also ecotours.

Try a milkshake, with or without alcohol, from the dairy shop Udder Delight when going to or coming from Magens Bay. They are very good :D.

Self guided walking tour in downtown Charlotte Amalie of the historic sites (you can find some information under Attractions in the St. Thomas drop down). Blackbeards and its related historic homes are neat. There is an admission fee for either self guided and with guide. Their website is http://blackbeardscastle.com/.

A couple day trips over to St. John for beach time, hiking, exploring some of the ruins. If you take your rental car over on the car barge or if you rent a car on St. John you can explore the island and beach hop. If taking the ferry and taxi, then Cinnamon Bay is a good choice as it has the beach, snorkeling and ruins with self guided walking trail in the same area. The ruins are just across the street from the beach parking area/entrance.

Sunday afternoons at Sapphire there is a live local band; fun listening to the music and dancing. Bolongo Bay resort has a Caribbean show which is cool. Paradise Point has a sunset happy hour which typically has a live band on Wednesday nights (if the road is open you can drive up but note that the road is narrow and with limited parking folks park on the side of the road which makes navigating parts of the road really tight; parking and taking the tram up is another option). Other bars and restaurants have entertainment on various nights that range from one musician to a band to karaoke. Pick up the St. Thomas/St. John this week magazine at the airport baggage claim area, it has a list of what's happening for the month.

Hope that helps a little ;).
