I know you have to pack 3 oz toiletries in a quart ziploc bag for your carry on luggage. But can I also use quart sized ziploc baggies to pack other things -- like our medicine bottles-- to keep them together and have this in my carry on? I keep hearing about the only one quart ziploc per person rule. I've looked on the official website and can't figure out if I can use baggies for other things, like pill bottles. This is probably some obvious answer everyone else knows... but could someone clear this up for me? I'm feeling very blond right now.....

PS-- Can I carry a compact with a mirror in it in my carry on? Everything from lipgloss to snow globes is covered on the official site-- but they never mention a glass mirror and I'd hate to lose it. Thank you!

Just came back from Florida and I had all of my medicine bottles(several) in a gallon size ziplock bag. Did not have to take them out of my carry on but the quart sz. with 3oz. bottles of liquid I did have to take out and show them. Also had small nylon cooler bag with insulin and syringes in and they never looked in that. I am not sure about compact but if it were me and it was important to me I would not put it in carry on.
Might add that we went thru security in 3 airports and was the same at each one. Hope this helps and have a great trip. Wish I was going also.

We flew back in February and although we didn't have any other ziplocs other than one quart size each a woman in front of us had other stuff in a gallon size ziploc and the bottles were over 3oz the security guard made her toss everything but what was in the one quart (and 3oz or less), she did put some of the smaller items in the quart bag but she had to toss the gallon bag and it's contents over 3oz. That happened in the JFK terminal. I think it really depends on the mood of the screener and the screener him/herself. I wouldn't risk losing stuff. I'd put everything in a quart bag and check the rest. If it's medicine you better make sure it's labeled and in the quart bag that way you won't go without, or put it in your checked in baggage. That's just what we experienced. As for the mirror, I'd put it in your checked luggage to avoid any hassles.

They do not care how many baggies you have or use nor the size OTHER than the one that holds the 3 oz (or smaller) containers that have your liquids, jels, cremes or anything else which comes close in it! It's that baggie that one takes out when going thru security. I would not put meds the same bag with any liquids which might leak and contiminate the meds. I use little/big/ any-sized baggies for packing all sorts of stuff - and even put some articles of clothing in them in the carry-on since I do not want an agent's gloved hands that have touched unimagined stuff in other's carry-ons rummaging thru and having contact with my stuff! But all the liquids, etc. should be put in the same baggie and kept seperate.

I completely agree woth CShell1019. I take lots of zip bags, in lots of sizes, containing all sorts of things in my carry-on. But ALL the liquids and gels (as listed on the TSA site) must take up no more space than the 1 quart zip which must be separately presented (max 3 ounces per bottle).

As an aside...I didn't really see on the site that the bottles must be "store labeled" (ie, not just empty, unlabeled bottles that you fill up with your own stuff), but to be on the safe side, since I had heard from some that they should be "prelabeled", I put things into bottles with labels. Like a "hotel" shampoo bottle, I refill with my preferred shampoo. Frankly there is some stuff that just doesn't come in the proper size little 3 oz bottle. More things are being packaged this way, though. It took me awhile to find the right size contact lens solution (that's not one I would personally want in a "used" bottle since it could harm eyes). It is amazing really how many little bottles you can fit in a quart bag.

I also know of no prohibition on mirrors, and have taken many through security without problem, but I agree when in doubt, just send it through checked if you will have a checked bag. For our upcoming trip, we will have checked bags, which gives me more leeway to pack many wonderful things, including the mother-lode of sunscreen! For carry-on we will have 4 total quart zips (4 passengers), so that should be more than enough for the essentials (stuff for trip itself, and stuff we don't want stranded in some lost baggage spot in Antarctica).

Have a good trip!

By the way everyone... I bought a carry-on travel bottle kit at Bed Bath and Beyond. It has 14 differently sized empty bottles and jars (for eye creams, etc.)... all 3 oz. or less. It was $9.99 and I used a $5 off store coupon, although I did have to spend $15 total to use the coupon.

Hi Paula!

Also agree with CShell - all my liquids were in 3-oz. bottles in a 1-quart bag. I had two other bags with dry toiletries/make-up, pills, etc. No problems. Also, my 3-oz. bottles were generic (WalMart) and not labeled.

Yeah, I agree there really shouldn't be a problem with "unlabeled" bottles by the posted rules, but some people have reported at least isolated problems. I wonder if those are more about the number of ounces not listed on some of the "generic" bottles? My older ones don't have anything stamped on them about capacity. I'll look for that next time I need some.

When I was (sadly) packing to come home I put all my " gift" make-up and perfumes in my carry-on bag, just not thinking, when we went thru security my roll-on deo and toothpaste were tossed, I held my breath to see what he would do. He took off the outer packaging, tossed the boxes and looked carefully at the containers, really a nice man, my daughter thanks you!

Thank you everyone, your answers have cleared things up for me! I'll definately pack with baggies, making sure everything's legal sized. I've been washing clothes, cleaning house, collecting vacation things in piles..... I'm pooped! We leave early Friday morning--- can't wait to leave gloomy Texas. What a dreary year. I'm ready for a month in the sun!

Paula, my husband and I just returned from SJ, we carried his injectable medication in the carry on and no one ever questioned anything. We had a letter from Dr. just in case. On the return flight, I forgot to put my lipsticks in the checked baggage and had it in my purse along w/mirror and was not questioned. But, I would recommend packing all liquids (other than prescription medications) in checked baggage.
