Hi Ron
I was wondering what was going on with Ms. Gertrude house the one located in Estate Thomas right next to the hospital. I use to admire that house as a kid , it was truly one of the most beautiful homes on St Thomas. I am just puzzle to see how it has falling into disrepair. Ms. Gertrude really use to take pride in that house.
The corporation is going to develop it pretty soon I understand.
RL
Thanks Ron
Such a beautiful property. Do hope that they do something good with it.
Hey Ron,
Tell us about the Jumbie's! I have always "heard" that when someone whom is building a house here, dies, while building, that the house will never be finished by family as the Jumbie's will get them! How true is this story?
That's hilarious! I have never heard that one at all.
RL
You can't be for REAL!!!! ???
So, you haven't heard about the 99 Jumbie beads in a jar story, either? 🙂
99 kernels of corn or rice or seeds on your back step, nothing in a jar though.
RL
Please tell the story of the 99 whatevers
I f you sprinkle 99 of whatever, outside your door, a spirit will not come in, as they will spend all night looking for the 100th one!
RL
Thanks, Ron
Now if it was 99 jumbie beads in a jar----what are jumbie beads?
There is a great little book: "Virgin Islands Tales of Ghosts, Hauntings and Jumbees" by Joan A. Medlicott and David S. Sasso. ISBN 1-56664-082-2, 1995. I no idea if it is still in print, but it does talk about the grains on your step. Also you should sleep with your clothes inside out to scare a jumbee, point a pin at a jumbee... All sorts of good and helpful hints! 😉
Jumbee beads are the seeds of a vine Adenanthera pavonina. ( From another great little book: "What a Pistarckle!" by Lito Valls. Unfortunately, I believe it IS out of print.)
The students at UVI on St Thomas swear that there are jumbees out west. Maybe that is just so they can use the excuse, "A jumbee stole my homework."
The story I have is similar to the 99 rice out side the door, only we have 99 Jumbee beads in a jar, in the house!
Regardless, cute stories and believes here!
actually it's "a jumbie ate my homework'
I can see the "logic" in how 99 whatevers outside could keep a jumbie outside looking for the 100th, but don't really see the "logic" in how having a jar with 99 jumbie beads inside the house would keep a jumbie from entering the house. How does that work?
I know that sometimes with things of this nature, nobody really knows how or why they work, just that they do work. Which is all that we need to know.
promoguy - put a brown paper bag on your head to keep the jumbies from eating your homework.
Ah, but some of us know more about these strange things than others.
That guy needs a shave.
Promo,
'bout time you chimed in! Hey, is it Christmas there?
Lex, No logic here!!! But it is fun to tell the story and this is truly what some people believe!
THAT'S what you notice about that guy?
Somebody else already noticed he needed to shave, I had to come up with something!
