Tried TTOL with these questions, and so far no good, so I'm hoping someone here can help me...........Doing company trip 1/6/08 thru 1/11/08 at the El Conquistador Golf resort and Casino near Fajardo, Puerto Rico. Anyone stayed there??? Are the restaurants/drinks at the resort pricey? Going to do the rain forest, Culebra, Vieques, but I can't find any good info on Fajardo particularly about shopping/dining/nightlife. Any info would be great!!! Also going to use up some Marriott points for 3-4 days prior to jumping over to Puerto Rico, and we could either do the Frenchman's Reef in STT or the Marriott in San Juan. We stayed at the Reef before and loved it, but this will be 1st time in Puerto Rico ( other than changing planes). Which way should we go? My thnx in advance!!

Tam

Try posting on the City-Data forum under "US territories." But surely PR has visitor forums? Do a Google search. I rather doubt that posters here will be able to provide the information you're seeking. The USVI may be relatively close to PR and the USVI DID just celebrate USVI/PR Friendship Day but... Cheers!

Can't help much since it has been so many years ago that I was at Conquistador but I recall it not being "inexpensive." but there are many many different restaurants, casual and more dressy, on the property as well as sections to the property. I'm not sure but if you did a seach for Fajardo you might come up with some more specific questions, some answers or even try TripAdvisor.com. Know it is the port for the ferrys to Vieques and Cuberla. It would depend if you wanted to headed to St. Thomas (it is a quick flight +all the airline hassles back and forth) or explore a different part and experience PR. I don't know that anyone could make that decision but you.

Can't help on El Conquistador but if you have never been to San Juan, it is worth a few days. The old city has a lot to offer, some really excellent restaurants there. Also two old stone forts that are worth seeing. Weather in Jan should be good, maybe a few rain showers, but pleasant temps. A lot of history in the old city, well worth a couple of days. The San Juan Marriott is a short bus or cab ride to the old city, has a pretty decent beach of its own, and a very good Italian restaurant. Has a casino but small by Las Vegas standards.
Whichever way you go, enjoy!

My husband and I stayed in the Fajardo area a couple of years ago. Here is the information I can offer.

El Conquistador Golf resort and Casino near Fajardo, Puerto Rico. Anyone stayed there???
Have not stayed here, but had some friends who did. The resort was very nice, but pricey.

Going to do the rain forest - El Yunque is a must in my own personal opinion. My favorite part of our visit.

Culebra - wonderful rustic little island. Stayed at Casa Ensenada. Can't say that I would recommend the hotel. However, we did rent a little boat from them and that was fun. Took it over to Culebrita and did a little snorkeling. We ate at two places when we were on Culebra but I can't remember the names. Dinner was at a restaurant on the canal it was good. Had breakfast at a little place right down from Casa Ensenada over the bridge right on the water it was GREAT!

Fajardo particularly about shopping/dining/nightlife. - Fajardo is a pretty populated area there were lots of restaurants both chain and local. Didn't have wonderful food there but I'm sure a local from there would be more helpful.

Again, this was a visit from two years ago so some of the information might be dated.

Natalie

I have stayed at the El Conquistador a bunch of years ago. It was the most impressive property I ever stayed at. The lobby, grounds, rooms etc were all very very nice. It was not cheap...... Food and drinks were pretty high ,although you had a lot of different options. One drawback is that there was really no beach on the property. They had a ferry to a small island just off shore which was pretty nice but the snorkeling was not too good. Also on the first day that we were there,it rained pretty hard and the water all around the property was all brown from the runoff in the area. It cleared up the next day. The Fajardo area was not really "touristy" in my opinion. Not much to see or do. The rain forest was really neat. Old San Juan was a very unique place. Overall I'd have to say that my experience on Puerto Rico was not one of my favorite trips. I never really got that island feel there. I will say that the Puerto Ricans were by far the friendliest of all the people that I've encountered. I can't say that I had a bad time on that trip but I prefer places like St.Croix & St.John.
