I have read that there is a bus that takes you along the main road in St. John. Does anyone have any further information? Is it useful for getting to some beaches and hiking trails? We plan to rent a car, but only for a couple of days. Thanks for any info.
If you go to the St. John guide on this site and use the getting around option there is a section on the public bus system there that gives the times and where it travels to and from that would be useful to you. Perhaps with the car you should visit the more far away spots that interest you and then walk, hike to the closer ones when you dont have the car and/or use the bus or taxi.
I was in st. Thomas lst October, 2001. The transportation is lousy.
Very poor country. We rented a car for a week. The car was a piece of
SHYT as they all are. They are all dented up. Had 2 flat tires with it.
They billed our credit card $800. 00 in damages..the damages were on the
car before we used it. Thank God the gal who tooj us, her father is a
billionier and he got us out of the mess. So documnet every mark..scratch on the car when you rent it.
The country is very poor. The food is very very expensive. We had the
condo overlooking St. Thomas free. As the gal's dad owns 3 of them.
Actually the public transportation on St. Thomas is pretty good. We just started using it on our last trip down there and we will definitely make more use of it in the future both on St. Thomas and St. John. A very economical and easy way to get around the island. We also rent a car on an as-needed basis. It works out well.
