We are considering vacationing on Water Island and would like comments from anyone who has stayed at the Waterfront Cottage. It sounds wonderful, but you never know! Thanks for your help!

Hello Katrinka,

I haven't stayed there but I have visited the property. It’s in a beautiful spot, great view of the water. The owner lives on the property with his family/children so if you are aiming for private this might not be it. Nice pool at the tip of the peninsula. The last time I visited there was on-going construction on one of the buildings, this was last year so I would guess the construction should be completed, but you could ask. I didn't visit inside the cottage as there were guests there, so not sure what the inside is like.

My husband & I were supposed to stay there for 6 nights at the beginning of june. We ended up only staying one miserable night. It was NOTHING like we expected. It sounded wonderful, but it was not even close to what it looked or sounded like on their website. If you would like more information feel free to email me. I don't want to trash these people, they were very nice, but I would consider looking elsewhere.

Thank you for the info!! Very much appreciated and we will definitely keep looking. Vacations are so rare and expensive that it is important to make it right. Thanks again!!

We just returned a week ago from staying 10 days at the Waterfront Cottage. We had a great vacation there. It is important to understand what kind of place it is though. It is not like staying at an upscale hotel. It was alot to me like staying in a cabin at one of our nice state parks. The positives were: It is very roomy. We went with two adults and 2 kids and it gave us lots of space. The beds were very comfortable and the view was great. There were lots of playtoys and floats to use and the kids enjoyed all of them. We also rented the small boat and that was great for snorkeling all around the island and running over to St. Thomas to shop. It added to the adventure. The snorkeling ws pretty good, not as good as we found over at St. John, but better than St. Thomas. The pool is absolutely fabulous. I spent several days never leaving that area. The pool in itself is nice, it is an infinity pool that due to the setting gives you the feeling when you are on a float that you will float right into the ocean. It has shaded and sun areas right within the pool. In addition, the Platform or deck area is set up like a Roman bath with large white columns and an awning over top that gives shade and again due to the setting you get the most incredible views and breeze. The dock he has is very nice with concrete steps and a railing to walk down easily. My kids enjoyed exploring among the rocks and I saw incredible amounts of sealife going on from the pool area just sitting in a comfortable chair and looking out over the rocks. Also, the cottage was well equipped with towels, cookware and appliances.
The negatives: Main one was no air conditioning. They did have ceiling fans and all the windows are screens with louvers, but in June it was extremely hot and I definitely missed the ac. It didn't seem to bother my husband and kids as much and it only really got to me a couple of nights. You certainly wanted to be sure you didn't cook anything in the oven and use the grill outside so as not to heat the place up even more. You also get bitten up at night. That will happen everywhere, but because the place is older there were some screens that had corners the no seemums could get in and you had to keep off on. The off worked but I didn't like going to bed with it on my skin. I should also mention there were some geckos in side the cottage, but they didn't bother me because they eat the bugs and as long as they stayed away from me I didn't care. (they did stay away!) You might occasionally see one on a wall. The place is older so keep that in mind.
I would stay there again. It was a wonderful, peaceful, adventurous vacation for us. I would want to go in the months that it gets a little cooler at night. The temperature didn't drop much in the evenings while we were there. Also, the family was there, but I felt very much it was just us in the cottage and we rarely ran into them even on the grounds. They were busy working etc. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.

I will be happy to answer anyone's questions about Water Island.
I am the owner of Providence Point.

The one grumbler on this board (Leeko) came and did everything, used everything, kayaks, pool, snorkeling gear, golf carts and ran all over the place, and seemed to be having a blast.

They offered no complaints about heat or bugs when they left, but claimed "personal reasons". Their deposit checks and payment check both bounced. I was left with no payment and I had to pay fees for their bad checks. Seems cheeky to write anything after skipping out on paying for the time they did stay.

Facts:

Temps rise to 95 in mid-summer and there is a steady Caribbean breeze. All cottages have ceiling fans and room fans too. Their cottage had new screens - so their comments are baseless.

I do my utmost to make this a wonderful place. It is older - the buildings date from the 1940's - but all have had major upgrades and refurbs in recent years. This is NOT the Ritz. This is not a sealed up office building. We came here to live because of the spectacular weather and we are not going to seal up the place for A/C. If you want A/C please do NOT come here.

This is a tropical island, not a sealed up hotel. We do NOT have air conditioning and never will. We cook every day and never found the stove to make the house hot. I vacationed in the cottage they used for ten years and never found the heat to be an issue.

As to bugs - we run a Mosquito Magnet and have far fewer bugs than most tropical settings. The mosquitoes here are about the same as in other lake or ocean settings we have visited. This is NOT moose country and not a particularly buggy place.

As to Geckos, we do not mind geckos - they are eco-friendly, they do nothing to people and they do control some insects. No one has every compalined about them.

Water Island has no snakes, no scorpions, no poisonous spiders or other nasty stuff. The worst you will find is some mosquitoes and we do our best to manage them too.

Write to me with questions.
