How much does it cost fopr a private taxi from the airport to the Red Hook ferry? I thought I read somewhere, but can't fin it anymore, that it was $60.00 for up to 6 people. Does anyone know if this is correct and if so can you recommend a taxi company. We will be travelling to St John in June with a group of 6 (4 adults and 2 children). If that price is correct it sounds like it would be a good idea to schedule a private taxi ahead of time. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated. This is our first trip to St John, in fact our first trip outside the continental US so we are a little nervous.

We've never prearranged transportation from the airport, just never crossed my mind to do so. As you leave the terminal there will be a lot of vans outside. It's all quite organized--although on first glance that may not be apparent. You'll be directed to a van going to Red Hook. Just to avoid misunderstandings, check with the driver about costs before you get in the van---total costs: fares, luggage, children. There really is a system behind everything and it works well enough, although it sometimes has a distinct West Indian flavor. It'll be clear where to go and what to do.

The onlyproblem is that while your sitting in an empty van, hopeing to make the next ferry, the driver is not going anywhere until every last seat is totally full. I've been the first in the van many times and missed the ferry by 5 or 10 minutes because the driver wouldn't leave the airport. I've also found that you are told which cab to get into, and you don't have a choice of finding one that is almost full. If your doing carry on only it would be nice to hop in a cab and get to the ferry even if it cost a good deal more than waiting for others to get their bags and then the hassle of stopping multiple times while ST tourists get dropped off at their hotels. There need to be a Red Hook Express. I'd pay for that and I bet many others would also.

Hello Kels,

It should be in a shared taxi, $13.00 for one person, $9.00 for each person in a group. Plus a few dollars per each piece of luggage after the first piece and/or for oversized bags. Children under six (6) years old will pay half price.

The St. Thomas Regulations state: Anyone requesting a taxi exclusively for themselves must negotiate a fare with the driver or operator before departure.

The St. John Regulations state: If you request a taxi exclusively for yourself you must pay for a total of six seats using the price from the three or more persons each column in the tariff tables. (For example: From Cruz Bay to Trunk Bay two persons requesting a private taxi must pay for four additional seats - two persons will pay $9.00 plus $16.00 for the four additional seats, three persons must pay for three additional seats and so forth.)

You can find the tariff tables by clicking on the respective island name at the top of this very page. From the drop down that appears choose Taxi Rates.
