Hi! This is my first time to post but I have been a lurker here for about 2 weeks. My husband (age 55) and I ( age 50) will be coming to STT/STJ for the first time for 7 days on Aug. 5th and have found this message board to be a great resource of information for us!! I just love the funny and informative trip reports that have been posted! Keep them up!

I do have a few questions that I need help with. We are flying out of Dallas,Tx., with a 3-hour layover in San Juan, and wonder if there are any decent restaurants inside the airport? Also, I smoke, so I will be running for the nearest exit /bar / restaurant as soon as I hop off the plane, lol! Do they allow smoking outside of the airport or anywhere inside the airport? If not, then they will have to arrest me, because no-one will get between me and my Marlboro! I have yet to book our car rental because I am in shock over the weekly SUV rates on STT/STJ, and so far, have found it difficult to get an agency to guarantee me a 4WD in writing. I called the 1-800 number for Budget and got a very disinterested young man on the phone who did not understand why I needed one in the first place. I later learned from this message board that it can be difficult just to get a car at Budget when you have reserved it, so will go to Avis and see what they say. We need to rent at the airport because we will be staying overnight in STT and want to do some shopping before getting on the car ferry to STJ. The kind lady who we booked our condo with in STJ says a 4WD is not essential for STJ, but is nice to have. I know I would much prefer more comfort, good a/c, and a trunk to store valuables in than a 4WD. Would love to hear your opinions on this.

Again, thanks for all the great tips and funny stories I have read here!!

Don't mind at all, Pia. I am glad to entertain! Ya are entertaining me, as a matter-of-fact ! I am sitting here at work ( I'm a Registered Nurse in a state mental hospital) and usually let the clients entertain me, but tonight I am enjoying the message board much more! So, do people usually snorkel pretty far from the beach? Quit snickering and answer please! Lol!

Sharon

P.S. Oh gawd! Now I have to go check out the comments on the other board!

TomB: You are more throwed than I am! I sucked about 3 ounces of Pepsi up my nose the back-way when I read your post! My staff thought they were going to have to do the 'hinny-lick' on me to revive me! Er, I mean't heimlich maneuver! Hmm, wonder if I can get old George to fall for the extension cord into the water trick? Later!

dnt: I was more worried about the effects of secondary smoke on the fishes! 😉 And then there is the possibility of baby damselfish choking on the butts...

A "hoot " is an east coast term to describe a person or situation that is beyond funny.

You keep coming back with the most amusing responses.

I wish I could be a mosquito on your wall and watch this st john vacation.

If I were that mosquito, I might write a NY magazine article about your adventures on St John and entertain the entire eastern seaboard.

Well do keep calm.....

Not too far that the extension cord won't reach 🙂 Seriously, it depends on what beach you are on. From Maho you snorkel along the right and left sides, and the beach is approx a 30 second swim away (if you swim and not snorkel) from the furthest point , 5 seconds at the beginning. At Honeymoon the beach is approx 5 seconds away from where it all starts, same at Francis, Hawksnest, Gibney and Jumbie, and then you swim out from there. I always see turtles at Maho and should I want to stand up on the sea grass - don't worry I never do - I could. Last week I was in the center of Maho approx 10 seconds from the shore line and saw 2 HUGE spotted rays (a first for me) they were fabulous, must have had a "wing" span of 6' or more and the "tail" (more like a long thin rope) must have been 8' or more - they were fabulous. If you are at Trunk, Waterlemon or Cinnamon you can snorkel around the cay and you will be further away from the actual beach and at Saltpond you will be further out, so again it depends on each location - but any way you cut it you will have a fabulous time and I'll be looking out for you 🙂
Talk to you soon
Pia

Well, it sounds like at some beaches my little drink floatie will come in handy! Wow! I sure hope I can see some big eagle rays and turtles! Pia, maybe we can meet up during our stay, even if it is just for a drink or a photo-op! It would be nice to meet some of ya while we are there. If anyone is running a Texas Hold'em tourney while we are there, please let me know! Aww, just a couple more days and we will be on our way!

I should add the official OSHA (Our Savior Has Arrived) WARNING to what I said earlier

The hardest thing that we had to over come was finding an extenstion cord for the blender. We finally figured that out by floating the ice chest with ice, and with a blow up dinghy from KMart attached to a 100 Ft power cord strung from a cypress tree branch to the dock - Drinks were served!

OSHA Warning:
1. Put a piece of Plywood on top the dinghy so you have a flat surface
2. Do not use a power cord longer than 100' - Blender motor does not get enough electricity
3. Do not attached multiple power cords together to reach the desired length.
4. Duct Tape in a plastic bag the blender and power connector to the plywood.
5. Restrict anyone from doing cannonballs of the dock
6. And most importantly.... for God's Sake (and yours) make sure the plug on the dock is a ground fault circuit

If your IQ is greater than 25 you will probably not try this at your swimming hole. If you do - we will miss on this board.

TomB: To make up for being totally insane, God gave you humor and artistic talent!! You would make a great psychiatric nurse! I laughed until I almost split my 'O' ring over that photo!

Thanks!

Gobucs:

You have got to be kidding? We are also flying American, and on their website it said you can bring two articles per person, such as a purse and carry-on! I had planned on carrying a tote bag filled with my wallet, snacks, cigs, and a travel pillow! Guess I will allow room on one carry-on for the tote bag, just in case they pull the same crap on me! I really, really appreciate that info!

You know, I go by the famous quote: " If God is watching us, the least we can be is entertaining." Glad I put a little laughter in everyone's day! Ya have sure made me laugh more than once! Believe me, in person I am worse, and George is just the opposite, quiet and sweet. Guess that is why we have been married almost 26 years!? If you see a 'Mutt and Jeff' couple walking around in a daze (me being the short dumpy one and George being the tall slender one), than that will be us! Please stop us and say "hi"!

On a more serious note: How is the weather now on STJ???

One more day and then wheels up!

Hey there,

I usually fly American when flying back to the States (actually going to be flying 21,000 miles with them in the next couple of months) and have never had a problem with carry on's - 1 personal item such as what one might think of as a rolling (small) suitcase that fits in an overhead and your purse/handbag.

As far as the weather is concerned.........well......it's stopped raining 🙂 that's the good news, but it is cool for here and overcast. You can check this "live" web cam shot of the ferry dock in Cruz Bay - I'm sure we will be back to normal soon.

Sharon, bring a big beach bag as your "purse" and then your carry on luggage. I packed a small purse inside of the suitcase to carry around with me while shopping. The rest of the time, I used a ziploc bag (I don't require much)as a purse and one of those waterproof cases around my neck (one big enough to carry credit card, license and cash) and the other just the size of a pack of cigarettes. (smoke a couple and put your lighter in the pack). Have a great time!

you have made us laugh until we can't see straight------they say we are all crazy ----some of us are just crazier than others! Can't wait to read your journal when you arrive back from your trip. They may have to put you in a straight jacket to get you back hereLOL My brother use to work in a mental hospital and he's been crazy ever since, even sorta looks like Charles Manson---gotta love him! Seriously, though I'm certain you pass on so much of your good humor to the patients!

Back to the carry on info---if you plan on bringing a bunch of liquor home, pack an empty bag in your suitcase---leave all your tubes and coolers behinh LOL

Actually, my husband just reminded me that american counted my purse as 1 carryon so we had to check my other carryon, hubby had 1 carry on also
Maybe the agent was in a bad mood that day.
We also checked in and out of MIA

I recently purchased an ice chest specifically designed to provide on-site beverages while hanging out in the water. It looks like a bell buoy support, with the ice chest portion making up the tall barrel portion and then there is a larger, broad circle extending from the base like an inner tube ring to provide stability and flotation. The circle has depressions for six cans/bottles/cups and each is numbered so you don't forget which bottle of beer is your own. It was $25 at Plaza on STX and it holds quite a lot of assorted beverages and ice. It also has a ring on the side to attach to a rope to keep it from drifting away. I had to do a better job of connecting the bottom plug than the manufacturer had done, but it works once you do some home repair. I don't know that I'd tow it along on any kind of a serious snorkel swim, but it's great for hanging out at Buck Island or Cane Bay, etc.

Lot in common but just the opposite

Married for 28 years -
Marriage is great institution if you like living in institutions (WC Fields again)

I smoke - Wife does not!
By smokes in islands lots cheaper!

Wife tall and lean - Just the opposite

For Me a party can happen anywhere/anytime (floating coolers included), Wife - it must be planned

Wife works in hospital (okay there is a difference) for normal folks

We are not Mutt and Jeff, more like twiddle dee and twiddle dumb - (you decide who is who)
(Smart Hubsand)
