Hi!

My family and I are going to be in St. John the last week of April and are interested in a powerboat charter with a captain. We would like a full day charter going to Virgin Gorda and maybe another stop. I have a few questions and any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated.

1) What is a reasonable rate for a full day charter with captain?

2) Would there be any problems bringing our 3 1/2 year old along? She's been swimming since she was six months; she would stay with one of us while the other is snorkeling.

3) Which charter company would you recommend?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Lori

Ocean Runners in Cruz Bay, ask if you can get Shea (He is also a private chef at night). About $350 for the day. Why can't she snorkel? I would get her a mask and fins stateside from a dive shop that can properly fit her. Let her practice in the bathtub before you go. May I suggest going to the Baths at VG (Your kid will freak!!) Have lunch at the Willie T. (She will freak again!) Snorkel the caves (not real caves but very safe for your daughter and way cool! The Indians nearby, (one of you hold her hand) Stop by Foxy's or the Soggy Dollar on the way back. A great day and worth every penny. Go on a day when the seas are calm.

Wes, thanks for the recommendation. Any chance you have their number? Couldn't find it listed on the site.

Re: taking our daughter snorkeling, we've tried to get her to do it in swimming lessons, but in the last few months she's developed a fear of putting her head under water. We're not pushing it, just letting her go at her own pace. Frankly, we hate that the swimming instructor got her onto a "noodle" because she now is so dependent on it, she won't try anything else.

Thanks again.

Lori

Try this http://stjohnbeachguide.com/Things%20to%20do.htm

We are also using 6 Paq Scuba also listed here. (Small fast boat 6 divers max) Yes Ginger they do.(Ocean Runner) No web site but the boats are top of the line. If you are into scuba you might combine a two tank dive with a BVI tour,(Baths, Willie T, Foxy's) and save some money w/ 6 Paq.

A thought for your little girl. In the islands, take a pack of crackers (individually wrapped like in a restuarant i.e. two captian's wafers) sit her in the water, waist high and a few feet away from her, crumble a cracker in your hand and let the crumbs sprinkle in the water.(Do this near submerged rocks...rocks=fish) You'll most likely get a bunch of Sargent Majors (small yellow and black striped fish) fluttering all around. Also get a fish ID Chart or book both sold everywhere down there to show her what she can see. The bottom of a pool (or tub) offers little incentive.
