Only five days left before we leave our home for 23 days. First night Manhattan, then STT, STJ and STX, last night Newark. I’m so exited. Even though we have travelled a lot, I have never been in this part of the world before, and I have never, ever used so much time to plan a vacation or made such a detailed plan at all. Know exactly where to stay every night, what to see, which beaches and which trails to try, and not only that - also which restaurants are a must, and which menu is recommended (this I will not tell our friends, they would think, I have lost my mind)! As you perhaps can understand, I am an addictive reader of the USVI boards - reading all trip reports, questions and answers, Rick’s advice for Newbies, seeing pictures etc., which also means that my expectations just have grown higher and higher, especially about STJ.

I have seen that people often are visiting STJ for wedding, honeymoon or anniversary, so I think I will tell you that we in a way are celebrating our Rubin wedding (who can beat that?). Last year we had been married for 40 years. It’s not common here that you celebrate a Rubin wedding, but we decided to do that. Who knows how the world will be to our Golden wedding? The question was: go on a journey or have a party? We decided to have a big celebration the day of the Rubin wedding and then take a long vacation this year. The celebration was a big success, so now we hope that the vacation will be the same.

So please ”forumfriends”, you have been so very, very helpful, cross your fingers for us: that my efforts about planning this vacation will be rewarded, that my husband, who hasn’t been so much involved in the planning, will not be disappointed, that the flights will be nearly in time, no strikes, no hurricanes, not too many bugs- in short -that nothing will happen, which can spoil our vacation!

You will have a great time. Now without me googling, the only Rubin I know is a samitch spelled differently. How much longer do I have to wait.

May I make one small suggestion. I assume you have a list of things you want to do, places you want to eat, etc? Cut it in half and throw one half away. Seriously. You will be amazed at how slow things are here. If you try to cram everything you think you need to do into your time, you will wind up stressed and frustrated that you are missing things.

Or better yet, throw the whole list away. Get up every day, pick a beach and go there. On the way, if you see something you "recognize" stop in.

Sounds like you have a fabulous vacation planned!! I wish you all the best. Use your detailed plans a a guideline, but give yourself permission to stray as muc has you wish, or as the island vibe dictates.

I am clueless about what a rubin wedding is. Is that a person, or a kind of anniversary?

Enjoy!! Please sahre a report when you return!

We did the same thing the first time we went
I had been on this site for months before we left and had hundreds of pages of things to do
However-
once your on the island you end up doing stuff you did not plan which makes for an even better vacation
it just gives you more of a reason to want to go back and do the stuff you missed out on
there is never enough time!
So much to see and so much to do!!!!!!

Your gonna have a vacation with memories to last you a life time and will be planning your next trip down before you even get home.
Have a great time and safe journeys

Have a great trip Have fun in NYC. Remember Becco for dinner is great! Half price tickets at the Marriott Marquis to see Alter Boys (off broadway) is a short fun play. In STJ have some of Joes BBQ for me & most of all relax and enjoy!

Hey Blu

I think it is what we know as a "Ruby" Wedding Anniversary (married 40 years)

LindaJ's comments is the only way to do things. We plan, but we never know on which day we're going to do something until the day before.

Looks like German potato salad to me!

A rueben wedding could be fun, but the kisses might be stinky!

I am very sorry. You have to forgive that I confuse some of you because of my bad English
(my excuse is that I normally only speak English on vacations). “Rubin” should have been “Ruby”. I was sure that the word has to be spelt in the same way as in Danish and have not looked in my dictionary.

Linne, don't worry about it. It was a little joke since you made such a cute little mistake.

On the other hand that is something to be married to the same person for 40 years. For me it's 18 plus 13 which equals 31 which I figure I might make 40 on the combo plan.
