Is it to early to start planning a trip for next April? Can you get deals ahead or is it hard to get reservations? It would be for a 25th Anniv.I want to stay at Caneel Bay but it seems booked up. Is this possible? The villa idea seems nice but the jeep driving is a little scary. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. Thanks! Jackie

Caneel is booked a year in advance?!? Wow. Go ahead and get a villa, the driving is not nearly as bad as some of us make it out to be.

Depending on where the villa is located, you may have to deal with unpaved and/or fairly steep roads (not the majority). However, after the first time you get used to it and by the end of the week you start driving like you live there and wonder what all of the fuss was about. Don't let driving on STJ turn you off to a villa.

Get a villa -- much more comfortable and the driving is a conquerable adventure and definitely part of the fun.
I would not advise driving far at night -- esp. after a few drinks -- since the roads are so windy and dark -- so for your first time stay sort of close to one of the two towns.

April is Wedding season! People tend to book wedding parties at least a year in advance and I have heard that STJ is one of the most popular wedding destinations in the world, now.

RENTING A VILLA IS THE WAY TO GO. MANY OF THE ISLAND VILLAS ARE PRIVATE/OR SEMI SO YOU'LL NOT HAVE THE INTRUSTION OF OTHERS...AS FOR RENTING A VEHICLE, I CAN'T IMAGINE BEING AT THE MERCY OF CABS..ALSO BY DRIVING YOURSELF YOU HAVE FREEDOM TO EXPLORE THE ISLAND AT YOUR LESIURE/ JUST PACK A LUNCH (VILLAS ALL HAVE COOLERS) AND STOP AT WHICHEVER BEACH CATCHES YOUR EYE.TRYING TO GET FROM ONE END OF THE ISLAND TO THE OTHER BY CAB WILL BE EXP. IF I CAN DRIVE ON THE LEFT/WITH HILLS ANYONE CAN !!! I CAN'T STRESS GETTING YOUR OWN WHEELS, IMO, IT'S A MUST!! GO FOR IT AND HAVE AN ADVENTURE !!
