Looking for any helpful information. Anybody been to Cheney Bay Beach resort ? Any recommended attractions ? Are we safe to tour the island on our own with a rental car ? Restaurants to recommend ? A big thank you to anyone who responds! I appreciate your comments and safeguards.

Don,

We just got back last week from STX. We did not stay at Cheney Bay Beach Resort, but parked and walked down to their beach. It was a nice beach and they have like little cottages. Appeared to be a nice and clean place. It was pretty close to lots of things.
We stayed at Tamarind Reef and loved it. Small, but very nice and accomodating. We did rent a car and did just fine. Just drive on the left and go slow as the roads are very narrow and winding. There are so many restaurants to recommend that I do not know where to begin. Every place we ate during the week we were there, was excellent.
Cheeseburgers, Off the Wall, Nolans Tavern(small little place for local food), Rumrunners, Golden Rail, Breezes, Cane Bay, Case Place, & Solitudes. The Deep End bar at the Tamarind Reef had some of the best food we tasted. Any resort or hotel restaurant is open for anyone. You do not have to stay there to eat there.
Everyone has a big concern for safety and if you use common sense, it is fine. We saw people out walking their dogs & jogging. We stopped and asked for directions and never had any problems or concerns.
Attractions? There are many and it just depends upon your definition of an attraction. There is plenty to see. It seems that we were always going to do something as opposed to just chilling at one beach all day. We did that but there are many nice beaches to visit, which we did.
Things to see include, Point Udall(furthest point east in the US), beer drinking pigs, board walk in Christiansted, buck island for snorkeling, rain forest, botanical gardens and these are just a few.
Please feel free to email me with any questions in particular.

don-

unlike popular belief, stx is full of stuff to do. it is an island full of history. i've heard nothing but good things about cheney. there are a few other 'resorts' on island too. safety on stx is using common sense. yl has a lot of good ideas/experiences from a tourists stand point. if you'd like to check out some of the history, check out whim museum and the lewetz (not sure of the spelling) museum. also feel free to email me with any questions. stx is a beautiful island and full of activities... but it is nice NOT having a ton of tourists on island. also, check out tropical java in frederiksted for any caffeine fixes. it's a nice cozy coffee shop new on island.

You could easily spend a month here and not run out of things to do. Plus, many places have few or no tourists.

Former Ohio Guy,

I've read of your adventures with great interest. We'll be in STX during September so hopefully we'll be able to go on some of the walks/beaches/areas that are lesser known but fantastic.

Guy,
We've been here for a year and haven't begun to scratch the surface. I figure I'll have to be here another 50 years to just go to all the beaches and eat in all the restaurants. That doesn't count all the other stuff. Let's see. In fifty years I'll be a hundred and ...

Other things not mentioned to do on St. Croix:

Casino - Not Las Vegas, but it is an option.

Golf - Three golf courses on STX.

Cycling - Lots of work with all the hills. Bikes can be rented from Endurance Sports.

Kite Surfing - Contact Jimmy at Kruzan Kites.

Have fun.

Jim

We did 3+ weeks on St. Croix last Spring and didn't get near what we had planned done. Hoping to make another long trip maybe in February to do some of the things we didn't get to do. I guess we "chilled" too much catching the view from the balcony. It sure was relaxing and fun. We hope to catch some of the home tours in February/March this time as well and maybe a Ruin Ramble.

We have a time share at Chenay Bay and have spent at least a week there for the past seven years. We're going back for 2 weeks in December. We like the separate "cottages". You certainly never feel like you're staying in a hotel and we have never heard noise from neighbors. The grounds are really gorgeous and I love the beach. You can walk along it for over 1/4 mile. This is one of the better beaches for finding shells. The snorkeling is decent at one end as well -- turtles, stingrays, lots of juvenile fishes.

The restaurant has its ups and downs. We tend not to eat there as service can be slow. Since each unit has a kitchenette, we do breakfast and sometimes lunch in and eat out for dinner. There are so many wonderful places to eat in STX. We particularly like Cheeseburgers (and it's just across the road from Chenay Bay). You can walk to Cheeseburgers, but if it's dark, it's not much fun walking back on the narrow road.

Do rent a car. We have stayed at Chenay Bay without a car and taxis are easy to get, but if you take more than one trip to town a day, the car is less expensive and more convenient than the taxi. Plus with a car, you can visit the rainforest, gardens, rum factory, drinking pigs, F'sted beaches.....
