Avoid walking around town at night.

I agree unless it's Red Hook don't wander around at night.

I also agree. Walking around red hook at night seems to be safe and you can do a good amount of bar hopping too!

I'm sure I'm going to get flamed for this... but the only thing I did that I could have done without was the day I spent at megans beach.

Make sure you get over to St. John at least once. It's an amazing island.

Have to agree with Matt. Paid my entrance fee to Megans, parked and looked at the wall to wall people & left! I can do that at home. Red Hook was "safe" and the bars were fun. I would also make it over to Iggies at Bolongo Bay at night. I believe Wed is Carribean night with stilt walker and fire eater and crafters. Fun place & good food & cheap drinks Look at the website for more info

Here's a tip on Magen's to avoid the experience above. If you go on a day when there are a lot of cruise ships in, it will be crowded. So don't go then. Or if you still want to go, go after 4 pm or so. Most of the cruise folks will be heading back to the ship by then plus you won't have to pay an entrance fee. Since you're staying on island for a week, try doing both and then judge for yourself. Good luck!

Magens Bay Tip:

Stay LEFT!

Magens is a wiiiiiiiide beach. If you only survey if from the entrance, it may look crowded (on 3+ ship days). Make a left ,upon entering in your car, and head down. Go to the end and park - then walk onto the beach and make anothe left - and you'll be on the sand in front of the coconut grove.

You'll find a different world. Cruise ships folks (and most visitors, in general) do not go down to the left end - same water, same sand - many more palm tress to left. There are no food or beverage facilities down there. But, you can just walk up to the right side for F&B. The comparison between left and right is like two different beaches.

Trust me - I am not making this up! Night and day! When I am with my daughter, I often don't go down there because it is so secluded and she makes no friends. We do our "nature hikes" down there...or go there to play ball.

Less than 8 days and my family and I will be competing for the same shade with you. Grab a weekly cruise ship schedule, they are in several of the weekly and monthly magazines. You will quickly discover that the STT tourism follows the same schedule. The shops downtown will be closed before the last ship's anchor is all the way up. If you are planning to do some shopping downtown, go on a day when there are only two or maybe three ships in port. Also when you go downtown you can walk the main streets pretty quick, but don't forget to go down the narrow alleys, there are some really neat stores in the alleys, not so many jewelry stores.

Blu, is correct about Magens, when you think "this must be far enough", go another 100 yards or so.

Don't go to Coki Beach- too many stands selling things and have been reported crime- stealing purses. Go to Magens Bay - the best on the island.

Lock your car always and don't go downtown at night. frenchtown is fine.

Have fun and enjoy our islands

Hey Cocki is fine. Much better than Megan's for snorkeling. Sure you're approaced on Cocki with 'you wanna....yada, yada' . Just SAY NO!!!

And by the way Megan's is kind of fun especially on the weekend when you get a local crowd.

Coki is the second best beach on St Thomas. The first is Sapphire Beach.
The locals at Coki are very nice. Cold beers and drinks served right on the beach. Don't be intimidated. If you pass on Coki and go to Magens Bay you'll be making a mistake.

Sapphire Beach is beautiful but the resort is the worst. Bad service when you get any service at all. Take a taxi to sapphire and stay on the beach all day snorkeling and relaxing. There's a gift shop with drinks and snacks there too.

We always enjoy Secret Harbor. It isn't crowded (I might have killed that with this post). Lots to see in the water and a great place to eat (Blue Moon Cafe). However the parking is limited.
