My brother will be staying at Pineapple Village in the next couple of weeks. I am VERY concerned about the condition of the resort as I have stayed at Point Pleasant before and know that the Renaissance is falling apart.

I have heard reviews that claim there is no security, rats, and cockroaches.

Pineapple Beach is not maintained and the dock was crumbling when I was last there in 2006.

My husband and I walked around the former Renaiissance resort for about an hour and it looked abandoned and creepy. Where are the Pineapple Villas in relation to the old Renaissance?

The Renaissance has been purchased by Wyndum who plan to open next year. It will be timeshares. Pineapple is still open but they are having a tough time of it.

I am concerned about my brother's safety. I understand that the area is largely abandoned and there have been issues with bugs, rats, and drugs in the area.

I have stayed at Point Pleasant and the old Renaissance property is a ghost town and pitch black at night.

I don't feel it is a safe area for him.

Your thoughts?

Wyndham Sugar Bay has purchased the old Renaissance property and, while waiting for various permits, are doing basic maintenance on the property. I wouldn't describe it as creepy or abandoned. I know a few owners at Pineapple and both they and the vacationers I meet who are staying there have said the place is just fine.

Bugs and rats are everywhere - this is the tropics - and as far as drugs are concerned, well, they're pretty much everywhere too if you go looking for them. As long as your brother is as vigilant as any visitor should be and follows the obvious precautions (keep your valuables to a minimum and in a safe place, don't walk around late at night, don't get stupid drunk etc.) he'll more than likely have a wonderful visit. Cheers!

I own a villa at Pineapple. Yes, the hotel/resort looks run-down. But as the previous person said, they are doing behind-the-scenes work and will open in 2009. I rent my condo to vacationers and they love it. In fact, some of them say they like it BECAUSE it is so quiet and peaceful. Others, of course, want to be where the action is. Different strokes for different folks. The hotel/resort has 24 hr. security at the guard gate leading to their/our property and also a guard on the beach. I would reiterate what the person said before me - If your brother keeps his head on straight, he will have a wonderful time.
