I will be in St. John for vacation. Cellular phone calls are considered international roaming. What will be the cheapest way to make calls to the States? Should I buy phone cards in St. Thomas/St. John, or should I but phone cards in the States prior to departure? Can you find public phones easily in St. John to make calls?
Any recommendation for a phone card that offers good reception in St. John?
Many many thanks in advance for any advice.
Some cellular companies roam in the usvi for "no extra fee". I have Cingular and it is the same for a call in St Croix as in San Francisco or Honolulu.
I carry a phone card just in case of signal problems. Mine is an MCI purchased at Costco.
Sprint Cellular is also not extra to use in the USVI. I had no additional charges and it worked well.
Not a cell card - you have to dial an 800 # for access so I don't know how that works with your cellular plan - but I picke dup a USA card at Food Center last week to use to call the kids and it is great - $5 got me over 5 hours of calls to Chicago.

Stella,
I got your email and will reply after I get to the office. I need to look at the Sprint bill to be sure. (I know that it was treated as a national call and included on the plan I have). Will reply later today.
Stella,
One phone is on what is called on the bill National Business Plan: 300 Anytime minutes to be used anywhere on Nationwide PCS network inc. domestic long distance calling.
The other phone says its on a plan called PCS Free and Clear. All minutes include long distance.
I'm looking at the Sprint bill and from St. Croix, C'sted area we made the calls home to Toledo area and nothing additional was charged. The USVI are on the Sprint PCS national network and are included in the above plans. Check your bill for what plan you have.
Good Luck!
