We will be in St. John in May and don't want to bring our cell phones. The house we will be staying in has phones so my question is this: What kind of phone cards should I purchase and do I need an international phone card? We are thinking about getting an 800 minute phone card. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

We have toll calling deactivated on our phone service for our vacation/rental home on Water Island. Therefore, we recommend our guests to buy a calling card once they get to St. Thomas - because I've never been able to get a calling card from the upper-48 to work. The phone service won't seem to recognize the toll free calling card number. When I've called the operator or stopped by the local telco office and inquired, the answer was that stateside toll free doesn't work in the VI and told to buy a calling card locally. Also, its been my experience that stores don't have calling cards visibly displayed. I have to ask the cashier for them.

If you can purchase a phone at a military AAFES facility do so. I use one when I visit "The Rock." I will be there on Friday April first until...........

When I was staying in a condo on STT last year, I used a phone card that I purchased at Sam's Club and it worked fine.

I'm a Sam's Club member. Do you remember what card you purchased? I've been told I need to read the back of the card to make sure it says "international calls". Thanks for the info. I might try to buy one at Sam's and if it doesn't work, then buy one when I get to St. John.

Hello,

I bought a AT&T phone card at Walmart. I can use it to call within the US or make International calls. It was less than $8.00 for 120 minutes and you can add minutes if needed. This phone card was suggested on another forum that everyone uses. I'm sure Sam's Club has them also.

Wish you luck and me too that it works!!!

I'm sure it was AT&T. We had a teenager with us, so we got an 800 minute card. It was only about $25.

Thanks to all for the help. I'm going to Sam's Club or Walmart and get a calling card. If it doesn't work, I'll purchase one on St. John.

We were just on STJ with a teenager who was away from her boyfriend, so you can imagine the phone bills. But, we got a cheap phone card for $5 (I think that was for approx 100 mins) and it worked great.
The house we stayed in only allowed local calls is not using a phone cards or calling card.
Pine Peace Market -- which is really cheaper that the rest on St john had them -- talke the right hand fork from the Texaco -- go past the Staarfish Market complex and past the b'ball courts -- its a nondescript building on the left
