we are thinking of renting a villa or cottage by the beach we do have a seven year old any good suggestions? We must be on the beach though and have a pool.

We love Secret harbor: it is a condo/time share (?) and there will be people there, but it has some nice units and is restful. Staff is helpful and the beach guys will be solicitous. If you want vies, ask for mountain top. If you want the beach, buildings 1-3 are best (and cost more)
No problem with kids, and the water is calm and the 7 year old can wade in and see fish. Also, over by the pier, can sit there and feed them, or watch the roaming iguanas (do NOT try to feed them, they are wild animals and they WILL be aggressive).
Bolongo Bay is also great, but the beach has rocks, so is not as nice, but still welcoming and they provide a day sail, on some plans, on a catamaran. And do take a day sail: if you don't snorkel, you can still sail and eat and drink, and if you do, even a child who can't swim well ( I'm not a swimmer, but somehow do very well in the Carib) will do fine. I've seen 3 year olds jump off the boat and paddle off. We like Nightwind out of Sapphire, but there are many. No problems with kids.
