Having flown to STX numerous times with my return flight always being STX/MIA, I know I go thru Customs in STX. And I know that the new passport rules state that you don't need a passport when traveling DIRECTLY from a US Territory to the States.
But my flight plans are STX/SJU then an overnight layover requiring my to leave the airport then SJU/Chicago/Detroit.
My questions are:
Do you need a passport to go from STX to SJU (and leave the sovereignty of the airport) if you are a US citizen? I know I don't need one to go from SJU back to the States.
When traveling from STX to SJU then to the States, do I go thru Customs in STX or SJU or both?
I know I'm being anally detailed in my questions but so far I've received conflicting and "pass the buck" answers from others.
Thanks
Both St. Croix and Puerto Rico are U.S. territories, so you do not need a U.S. Passport. You are still in the United States.
However, check with your carrier to verify boarding requirements as they may vary after January 23, 2007.
The same rules for traveling STX/SJU apply when traveling STX/MIA.
Also, you only go through customs in STX. The SJU flights are in the same area as the mainland flights at the airport. When traveling from SJU to the mainland, you do not go through customs, you simply go through a simple US Agriculture inspection and then check in for your flight like any domestic US flight.
