Travelling to St Thomas in February , hopefully our passports will come through in time. In case they do not -- My question is has anyone had any problems travelling to St Thomas without a valid US Passport recently. Reading the government website it states you can travel to US terriorities without a valid passport. Any comments?
While the passport is the best way to confirm your identity and citizenship, you may also do so with the combo of a government issued picture ID like a driver license, plus a certified copy of original of your birth certificate.
*oh, and one more thing...*
Keep in mind that day trips to the British Virgin Islands or other Caribbean Islands besides St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix or Water Island, will not be possible - since you need the passport in order to re-enter the United States Virgin Islands...
I'm pretty sure you have enough time to get your Passport but if not make certain that in addition to your govt. issued photo ID you have a certified copy of your birth certificate WITH a RAISED SEAL. Saw an unfortunate young couple with an infant turned away at the ticket counter because they only had a photo copy, no raised seal..They had to wait until the next day for another flight to their Caribbean Island Vacation. Now that's a bummer..
bobcside: Were the people you referenced travelling to the USVI or the BVI? A passport is not required for travel between mainland US and the USVI.
To gain re-entry to the US Mainland from any US Territory or Commonwealth, an infant must have a Birth Certificate with a raised seal and adults must have a Govt issued photo ID card and a Birth Certificate with a raised seal.
