Do you need a passport to go from St. Thomas to St. John?
Nope, not even your license.
No, but a boat helps a lot!
Ya think? I was planning on swimming!!
Last year, in the Homeland Security frenzy around the ferry docks I remember it being reported that ID was required when getting on the ferries. Have they relaxed this requirement?

If Immigration is doing a sweep and looking for "illegals" - and you never know when they might do this - you do need id such as a drivers license so always have it just in case.
Yeah they caught some illegals hiding under boats the other day when I was in Red Hook.
Well, all I can say is good 🙂
I hear that! 🙂
Mary: I would highly recommend that anyone traveling outside the contiguous 48 states obtain a passport. For one thing, it is the gold standard in identification. Also, once you are in the Caribbean, you might want to island hop. Next year you will be required to have a passport to go the the BVI. It is good for 10 years, so get a head start and apply now! 😉
Yes, please always be prepared to show government issued picture ID when boarding ferries to St. John. It's still possible that you will be checked.
They do check your ID when boarding the plane for your trip back home. You will not pass security check points in the airport without a "passport" or a "drivers license and birth certificate".
