My husband and I have waited too long to get a passport before traveling in June. Do we need a passport to visit the US VI for any reason?

You don't need a passport to enter the territory. However, upon leaving you go through Customs and Immigration and you MAY be asked for proof of identity and citizenship. A government-issued photographic ID such as a state driver's license will confirm identity and in order to prove citizenship you should carry with you a copy of your birth certificate (or naturalization papers). You may be asked for nothing, you may only be asked to show your photo ID but better safe than sorry. Once in a while unheralded "swoops" are made and if you don't have what they want to see they can and will pull you out of the line to ask you additional questions.

You will NOT be allowed to enter the British Virgin Islands without a passport under any circumstances. Hope that helps. Cheers and have a great vacation!

Welcome to the forum! You did not mention where your citizenship. The common assumption is from US. If that is the case then STT Resident is correct. You might also check with the TSA and ask the airline that you are traveling with. If I were you I would go ahead and apply for a passport now anyway. It is so much easier to have a passport for airline travel these days.

One more thing, do you have an expired passport or would this be your first one? An expired passport along with other qualified ID USED to be of help. I don't know if it still does or not.

TSA has nothing to do with the issue in question, the OP has already said that she and her husband have waited too long to get a passport for travel in June and the assumption that we're talking about US citizenship is a given. When you say that an expired passport "used to be of help" along with other documentation, I'm assuming you're referring to entry into the BVI and that doesn't hold true any more. A valid passport or a passport card (only eligible for sea entry) is a must.

OK, I guess I should have been more specific for some here. Check with the TSA, Customs Department and your airline as those are the people who will be requesting ID for your travel to and from the US VI. If you are a US citizen you can check this website to see about an expedited passport;
http://travel.state.gov/passport/hurry/hurry_831.html
If you are not a US citizen you will need a passport to travel to and from the US VI.
I did not suggest an expired passport to travel to and from the BVI as first the OP mentioned nothing about travel there (and I did not assume so) second it will do no good for a travel between the US VI and the BVI.

I think that most who visit this forum are travelling from the US but I am sure that many are not US citizens and since all countries have passports I don't think it is a given that the OP is a US citizen. I have met folks from Canada, Germany and the UK while in the US VI. I am certain that as a resident of STT that you have seen people of many nationalities visiting the islands.
I hope you have a nice trip toein the sand! Like your handle BTW!

It is Immigration [ INS] that requires proof of citizenship.
