We will be visiting St John in May this year. I have read a lot about how difficult it is to park on the island, especially in Cruz Bay. Does anyone know what kind of handicapped parking is available? I have a Florida handicapped parking permit. Will I be able to use it there? Should I even bother to bring it? Thanks!

I know I have seen signs for handicapped parking at the airport in STT, but I do not ever remember seeing any signs in downtown Cruz Bay. I am sure there is some, but by know means will you find anywhere near the amount spaces you will find in the states.

Make sure you rent a car downtown Cruz Bay. Most of them allow for you to park on their lot, which at least gets you in the ballpark.

Me the only thing that I found that truly works is: "St. Anthony, St. Anthony, please come around. Something is lost but cannot be found."

St Anthony is the Patron Saint of Parking for us Catholics, but he will help anybody no matter of denomination or lack thereof equally 😎

In Cruz Bay there are a few handicapped parking spots. The National Park beaches with parking lots like Cinnamon Bay, Trunk Bay and Hawksnest each have a couple spots. In front of Mongoose Junction I think there is one and the Marketplace has a couple spots too.

Last year someone asked on the message board about the validity of stateside handicapped parking permits and a few calls were made around to the Police Dept on St. John and on St. Thomas and there was no definitive answer, some said the person should come in for a temp VI placard, others said since the person is only on vacation for a short time use the stateside permit. So do bring your handicapped parking permit and display it.

Thank you both for the quick answers. I'll be sure and bring the permit *and* a prayer for St. Anthony. 🙂

We always rent our vehicles from Conrad Sutton because they allow you to park in their lot. It's centrally located to everywhere in town and you never have to worry about finding a space.

There are a few HC parking spots in Cruz Bay. One in next to the ferry dock and another near the public restrooms, in front of the customs building. The Marketplace also a has a few, one or two on each parking level. Make sure you have your permit and that it is prominently displayed.

So…………………… I have to come back to St Anthony. For those who thought I recommended the short ditty of a prayer in tongue and cheek you are incorrect.

We will be leaving for STJ in 12 days! The last few weeks have been totally draining for our family – work issues, Family Health, Ambulance trips to the ER, Dealing Elderly Parents, Work Travel, and very close friends that have had to endure some real emotional heartache. So what does this have to do with St Anthony?

Last night when my wife got home she was in tears and visibly shaken. :S I thought what now? She held out her hand and her diamond had come dislodged from the setting and was missing. 😮 She noticed it when she got on the rowing machine at the YMCA to stroke away some stress and the prongs of her ring were sticking through the gloves. A search of the YMCA, hallways, changing rooms, parking lots, cars. Of course a phone alert went out to all locations and she knew she would have to retrace her sojourn into the third world of WalMart, where she stopped to pick up some wrapping paper. And of course the 5 floors of hospital and numerous departments within that she ventures in her day to day activities - NO STONE Sightings. (td)

The ring is a family heirloom and now about 60 years old. A very unique blue diamond set in platinum, but the value was not our concern just that a piece of family history was gone. :$)

So I got in bed last night, "St. Anthony, St. Anthony, please come around. Something is lost but cannot be found." When I awoke up this morning as my wife was leaving to work -"St. Anthony, St Anthony, please come around. Something is lost but cannot be found." With an unsuccessful search at WalMart on her way to work things were not looking good for the home team!

She got to her desk and sitting on her keyboard was one each blue diamond…

I am bringing my St Anthony prayer to STJ ;), my wife is leaving her ring to be repaired! 😀

BTW - I still do hear the Christmas Bells also!

TomB-

I enjoyed your story this morning not for it's entertainment quality as I can only imagine what your dear wife was going though, but because I tend to be a bit absent minded at times and St. Anthony knows me well! ...LOL! Glad all turned out okay and I pray that things in your life settle down so you don't have spend anytime lying on the beach worrying about what's going on at home while you are on vacation. ..

Deb

p.s. I can still hear the Christmas Bells too 😉

TomB --
I'm so glad your wife's diamond turned up. My own ring is not an heirloom but I know I'd be crushed if I lost a stone from it. I believe in fate, Kismet, Kharma or whatever such idea, including prayers to St. Anthony. There's way more to life than we can see and know.

Thanks to everyone who was kind enough to reply to my question. I'm encouraged that I may be able to enjoy some shopping, restaurants and such while I'm on St. John. I'm not extremely handicapped but I'm not able to walk long distances. This is a recent development and this will be our first trip having to deal with the problem. I was worrying that my disability might really spoil our trip.

No Way!
It may make a little different experince, but you will be in paradise and we all know that life is good as long as you are in ST John.

Don't hesitate or even think that the trip will be spoiled. To steal a phrase from Nike - Just Do It!

PonyFla,

I looked for handicapped parking on our trip - I never saw any designated spots.
Paid parking downtown is now available if all else fails.
We had to use it a couple times, but we had a large vehicle for 6

TomB -- Thanks for the information, it was so nice of you to look. We leave here next Saturday and both DH and I are really getting excited. I have no doubt that we'll have a fantastic time! Worst case scenario, DH drops me off wherever we want to go and then finds a place to park. Thank goodness for chauffeurs! 😎

I can't wait!

I'm sure their are a few Handicapped spots in STJ. I can think of several including spots at the Ferry Dock, Mongoose Junction, Marketplace and Coral Bay at Cocolobo Plaza.

It is very likely that you will get toknow Sliman as in Sliman's parking very well while in town. He has a parking lot, pay of course right across the street from Warfside Village in cruz bay. It is level secured and walking distance from everything in Cruz Bay. Enjoy your trip.
