My wife and I are going to USVI in 2 weeks. We plan to spend the last night at the airport, since our flight is at 6am. Is there any safety concerns? Thanks

I think the airport is closed at nite. but if you are passed thru customs, then i think you would have no worries sleeping in that zone. but i would be surprised if it is possible to spend the nite. I stay in Charlotte Amalie when I have an early flight.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but at least on STX, the airport is closed after the last flight of the day and does not open again until the first flight of the morning. I don't believe you can stay in the airport overnight.

The previous posters are correct. The airport closes and you can not stay there. There are a few hotels right at the entrance of the airport.

Thank you guys for the response. Do you know when the airport opens? My flight is at 6am, and I have to be there at least 1 hour before the flight since I have to go through the custom service as an international.

Now I am thinking of staying at a hotel, if staying at the airport is not an option.

Call your airline! They have opening/check in times.

There are no flights at 6 am. AA flies out at 6:41.You better double check that. When their first flight was at 7:20, they opened the counter at 5:45. The customs and TSA didn't open until 6:30. Now with that earlier flight, I suppose they will open a little earlier. Problem is that taxis are allowed to charge a premium to go pick up in the wee hours.
A couple of years ago AA had scheduled their jet to leave at 7AM. That soon changed after they received so many complaints about paying what was thought to be highway robbery prices for people to be picked up at around 4 AM! And again, they didn't open their counter until 6:45! They had to go through customs in Miami!.
I believe that flight may soon change as well, so keep checking.

RL, you are right, my flight is 6:57am (not 6 am) though Cape Air. If the customs open at 6:30am, the time (27 min) is really tight.

How much do the Taxi charge at night, say from downtown to the airport.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a Best Western or Days Inn directly across from the airport? I though I remembered seeing it in September. I almost missed my flight and had to stay there! I also thought it was in walking distance to the airport. If so...that would be the place to stay so you don't have to pay the crazy taxi fees.

There is a Best Western walking distance from the airport; crew stay there pretty much every night!

Last I heard they wanted $30 for one person at 4:30 in the morning. 6:00 should be okay for Cape Air. Only 6 or 7 passengers!

I would recommend the Best Western Emerald Beach as opposed to the other Best Western. Stayed at both, Emerald Beach is definitely better although just a touch further from the airport (about 1/2 mi). Cleaner, nice pool, right on the beach. Still $150/ni or so.

I decided to stay in Galleon house hotel in the historic district. It was cheap ($85) and they told me they always have a taxi driver picking people up early morning. I remember they told me something like $15/person.

By the way, the budget car rental people told me I can return the car in the after hours too. (the airport location opens 7am -10pm). They say I can just park the car somewhere close and drop the key and paperwork in the box, even in mid-night. That will save the taxi fee, but I don't know if that is safe. any ideas?

RL, that does sound like hi-way robbery

I stayed at the Galleon house last year when I had an early flight out of STT, and it served its purpose just fine! Nothing too fancy, but it was a comfortable place to sleep, and we had no problems getting a taxi early in the morning to get to the airport.
