We have reservation on St. John in a few weeks. Rather than waste the first and last days of vacation on travel, we're thinking about flying to St. Thomas, renting a car, overnight there, then taking the car barge to St. John the next day. At the end of the trip, we'd take the barge back to St. Thomas, overnight there, and fly out the next day.
Can anyone suggest any suitable (and inexpensive) places to stay on St. Thomas (think "just right, overnight") and enjoyable (and inexpensive) ways to kill an evening or two while there? We're trying to economize on the STT part of the trip, but anything with local atmosphere or color would be interesting.
We are three: a man, a woman, and their 15-year-old son. Thanks in advance.
Maybe people are finally realizing that those of us who live here year round will spend money on entertainment. I hope it continues, which is why I try to promote them as best I can.
If we're going to buy any groceries, would there be any cost advantage to doing so on St. Thomas prior to heading over to St. John? Would it be cheaper to fill up the car on St. Thomas after returning from St. John? Or are prices pretty much the same on both islands?

Absolutely, it will be less expensive to grocery shop in STT before you head over to STJ.
You may find some items less costly in STJ but overall prices are better here than there.
Of course it depends what you are used to paying so don't let your jaw hit the floor when you check out STT prices.
