*Is it possible to visit the house that previously belong to J. Robert Oppenheimer?
Yes. You can access it on the South Shore road. You do have to park on the street and walk in. It belongs to the people of the VI now and has been converted to a picnic house!

Steve,
I believe Oppenheimer's STJ house is now a Community Center so you could probabaly arrange to see it but I don't know who is in charge of the property.
Hello,
You can walk around the outside of it. Its usually locked up unless there are parties, scouts, groups renting it out for a function.
I beleive it is maintained by the VI Dept. of Parks & Recreation.

The Oppenheimers' daughter willed the house and property to the government of St John, and in about 1992 it was torn down (it was in very bad shape anyway) and the government built a small community center there for use by local scout troups or St John residents for picnics, parties, political gatherings, concerts, etc. It is located on the north shore (not south shore) of St John about 3 miles east of the town of Cruz Bay on "Oppenheimer Beach" which is between Hawksnest Beach and Peace Hill. There is space for a few cars to park in front of the gate there, but most of the letters of the name on the gate have disappeared. The beach area is public, but there are several private houses along the beach, so be sure to avoid going on their private property if you visit the spot. Hope this answers your questions.
Right, North shore! What was i thinking? LOL. Carol, none of that structure was a part of the original house for real?
Ronnie
That's right. Our house is right above it and we watched the Oppenheimer beachhouse being demolished and then over the next several years the new community center was built there, so there has been nothing left of his original house for almost 15 years now. Sorry.
Too much! I thought they had redone it to where it is now. They could have done a better job, I would think!
Thanks.
Ronnie
Ronnie, do you know how we go about reserving the beach for a wedding? Been all over the net can't seem to find any info.
