We'll be leaving Chicago and arriving in St.T about 3:00. I doubt we can make the Red Hook by the 4:00 and are assuming we'll make the 5:00 ferry.

Then we'll get the Jeep and head for a store to get a few things.

The question is - By the time we're ready to go to out cottage near Johns Folly it should be dark right? Since we have never been to St.J how concerned should we be on driving to the other side of the island in the dark driving on the left on unknown roads.

Should have no problems about getting lost right??? I mean, there are not to many OTHER roads to take. Ya can't go fast ANYWAY. We'l be tired from a long day but PROBEBLY pretty spiked on adrenaline still.

Grinder,
You may well catch the 4:00 out of Charlotte which will get you to Cruz Bay by 4:30 or so. That will help, but it's still liable to be getting pretty dark by the time you head out of town. My best advice is just to take a map (the routes are marked pretty well) and drive carefully and slowly. You should be fine, I mean, it's an island, how lost can you get? (My wife says REAL lost.) (Ignore her.)

Hello Grinder,

It will likely be dark by the time you are finished getting your rental car. Sunsets around 5:45pm.

Getting lost isn't a big concern on St. John, not too many roads. And nope you can't go very fast so just take your time and you'll be fine.

Thanks Islander. We had not even taken sunlight into account until a few days ago, then DJ proclaims "IT'LL BE DARK"!! thus the question.

I figure the plane comes in late, the taxi is slow and we're NOT going to be in a hurry, Then shopping for food and water and by the time we're ready. DARK! not that dark is a bad thing, dusk is one of the best time for pictures but . . . . . . .

http://www.sunrisesunset.com/custom_srss_calendar.asp

This site provides sunrise/sunset times for any location or date. It appears sunset will be ~5:50 PM for STJ on December 20.
I found driving at night better than during the day! although street lights are few and far between, it was easier to 'see' oncoming traffic on the switchback roads by their headlights. During the day, you need to honk your horn to let someone know you are coming around sharp bends.

It's rea;;y not that bad and besides, you are on vacation, using island time and no cares. Relax, slow down and enjoy.
