Are you visiting by cruise ship? Or are you staying in a hotel? I ask because my recommendations would be different for those in a hotel, vs. those on a cruise.

Hello Arie,

Another question... what might your group like to do... beaches, fishing, boating, hiking, shopping, guided tour, historical walking tour, scuba diving... 😉 lots to do. So give us an idea of your group's interests.

I assume from what you have said that you are arriving on St. Thomas by cruise ship for one day. Here is my recommendation: I would suggest taking the ferry from St. Thomas to St. John, a sister island. There are hourly ferries from Red Hook, a town about a 20 or 25 minute cab ride from the area where the cruise ships dock, and less frequent ferries from a dock that is a ten-minute ride from the cruise ship docks. The ferry ride itself is about 25 minutes from Red Hook and maybe 40 minutes from the downtown dock. The ferry will drop you off in Cruz Bay, a very charming and laid back town in St. John that is very walkable. The Mongoose Junction shopping center is a fun stop if you like shopping, and there are numerous other small shops, and a great variety of restaurants and food or beverage stands.

If you are adventuruous, rent a car in St. John, get a map, and drive to the following spots: 1) Trunk Bay, a beautiful and much-photographed beach, which is very nice for swimming and sunning; 2) the Bordeau, a place high in the hills which has a bar and restaurant and a few shops, and offers oustanding views; and 3) if time permits, take a drive to Coral Bay and even beyond to the more remote East End of St. John. The road to Trunk Bay has a turnout that affords a great view from above of Trunk Bay. If you have, say, a total of seven or eight hours from the time you arrive in St. Thomas to the time you must depart St. Thomas, I think that would be enough time to enjoy shopping in Cruz Bay and swimming in Trunk Bay. Depending on how much time you spend in these two places, there might be time for a drive to the Bordeaux and Coral Bay. If you are just going to walk Cruz Bay and then go to Trunk Bay, I would not rent a car, but would instead use taxis.
