Hi,
I am planning on surprising my husband with a trip to the islands for his 30th birthday October 2008. I have never been to the islands during the fall months and was wondering how is the weather, does it rain a lot?
Thank you for your time!
Ann
Hi Ann,
If my memory serves me right, it is October and November that technically have the most rainfall. However, in my experience, and from what I've heard others say, when it rains, it doesn't rain long. I think any month is a fine month to travel to USVI/BVIs. I've neither heard anyone say that it rained the entire duration of their trip nor that their vacation was hampered by rain (although I'm sure it's always a possibility in any location). We visited in November, 2006 and it rained on us twice. Once while swimming -- we thoroughly enjoyed the 1 minute shower. Another time on the way to dinner -- we stood under an awning for about 4 minutes while it passed. We saw three showers in February 2007 -- same situations. Anyway, I don't think you have anything to worry about. The only thing to consider is that hurricane season technically runs through the end of October. Still, I personally, wouldn't hesitate to schedule an October trip. Odds are that you'll have a perfect trip and things will be a tad less crowded. =)
Not sure which island you are thinking of. We were on STJ last Oct. Think we had a brief shower one afternoon. I understood that the weather was a little warmer than it usually is in Oct. Days were mid to upper 80s. Water was great. The only drawback is that a number of restaurants are closed in Oct, especially around Coral Bay. About the only thing open was Aqua Bistro and Skinny Legs. Also if you are thinking of a daysail, a number of the captains aren't doing daysails in Oct. On the very positive side, due to the season, you will often have some of the beaches totally to yourself. Technically it is still hurricane season but the probablity of hurricane in the area is pretty low once you get past Sept.
