My partner and I are planning a trip to St John in late November - the week of Thanksgiving to be exact.
I'm looking for advice on airfare - everything I'm finding right now seems really high...$700 on the low end. Is it better to purchase my tickets now when I know they're available or will they go down in price as we get closer to the date of our trip?
I know it's always a gamble to play the airfare game, but wondering if anyone has experience in traveling for pleasure during one of the busiest times of the year at US airports.
Thanks,
Michelle
I'm no expert, Michelle, but I've flown to STX 8 times from the East Coast and routinely pay $700 or more. The airlines don't do too much discounting to the VIs. I'd lock the price in while there are tickets to be had.

Michelle, I haven't paid over 650 a trip yet out of Detroit. But.... at that time of the year, Peak Holiday season. I'd buy now. AND NEVER LOOK AGAIN. If were all wrong on the advice it'll just upset you...
I'm pretty good at finding low fares, maybe I can help you out. What dates were you looking for? Some advice, you should wait a while before you buy tickets in November, the fare will probably go down by then. Fares are always super-expensive when you buy them way in advance. I go to school in Rhode Island, and visit home in St. Croix, and I usually get tickets from Boston to St. Croix for between $450 and $550. Good luck on the fares.
Would like to get down there a few days before Thanksgiving - sometime between November 21 and 24... Then stay a week.
Any help you can give me on finding a deal would be great!
As has been mentioned, it's the peak Holiday travel season - I don't think I'll find a much better deal, but planned on waiting about a month before purchasing, anyways.
Thanks,
Wish...
I found a fare on Spirit Airlines from Detroit to San Juan, and on Transmeridian Air from Toledo (which they said was near Detroit) to San Juan. Both were $376. If you add that to the cost of getting to St. Thomas (between $150 and 200), you will save up to $200 on that. Does that route sound interesting? Or you would pay more to avoid the hassle of switching airlines in San Juan?
Dominic, your'e a mean man (LOL) tempting me with a flights that are within ten minutes of my house. I watch TMA fly out from my shop window going to San Juan everyday.
Flying out of Minneapolis, but willing to switch planes if need be to get a good deal. Just don't want to make it a 3-day excursion to get there!
Did you find that fare on-line I'm assuming? What's the website?

I know these travel dates don't go thru Nov but for May-June 12 it is a bargain!

LOL, The websites were www.tmair.com and www.spiritair.com. I don't think they fly to Minneapolis though. I made the mistake of thinking you were flying out of Detroit, I guessed I got mixed up. I'll check for some good fares from Minneapolis, and get back to you.
I have found that Travelocity.com has really good fares. I always buy my tickets online. I just flew to Germany for $380 roundtrip from Seattle...
You can sign up for "Fare Watcher" and they'll send you an email each time the price lowers. FOR FREE!
I just checked it and they have got Seattle-STT for $300.....
orbitz.com is good too....
The fares I found from Minneapolis to St. Thomas were.... around $700. If I were you, I'd wait for the fares to go down. Sorry I couldn't find anything cheaper.
