The last time we were in St. Thomas we got eaten alive by no seeums but didn't know what they were until we got back to the states. They're nasty. Any ideas/help for preventing the bites? Can you buy a repelant in advance or on the island that actually works? These little devils loved me.

Thanks

Avon Skin So Soft seems to work the best. None of the repellants we used helped.

I'd use an insect repellant with a high percentage of DEET. I've heard others metion Deep Woods Off. Also, call your physician and ask for a prescription for .05% Diprolene lotion. This works to take away the itch - it's far, far, far superior to Benadryl lotion or any of the others.

Keep in mind that noseeums and mosquitos are not always around. I've been at the same destination at the same time of year and been eaten alive one year and not touched the next. It depends largely on the weather immediately preceding your visit.

Trust me, the Diprolene will help - a lot.

We go hit with the No seeums at Bluebeard's Beach Club but only while eating at their facility. The beach and pool area was fine.

Hi There,

As for dealing with the itching after you've been attacked by no-see-um's....stop by the Sunrise Pharmacy at Red Hook and pick up some 'Goop'. They make it there and keep it in the fridge. It works wonders with getting rid of the itching.

Watch what type of moisturizing you use after your shower. The no-see-ums never bothered me, in the many years of our visits, until I used a certain kind of lotion. Try just sticking with skin-so-soft after your showers.

WOW...we just got back yesterday from ST. Thomas.....stayed at Bluebeards Beach Club.......and I got eaten alive by those bugs also! and I mean eaten alive. So did many, many other women, but only 2 men that I saw.

What did you do to get rid of them??? I tried lice shampoo, and benedril, but they are still spreading. I just put nail polish on each welt hoping it will stop them from spreading.

No seeums are just terrible. I think the only thing that works for them is how fast you can run and get inside.

They're just as bad, or maybe worse in Florida. Luckily we didn't have a problem when we went early June of last year.

I think they feel like somebody sticking you with a pin. They are the smallest bugs I've ever seen. They are also flying teeth...that's what we call them.

There is a product called Cactus Juice that seems to work well for No Seeums. I've used it in and around the marshes in SC while fishing and shrimping. It doesn't smell as bad as OFF and it has a 20 spf. The only problem is that once you get your body protected they jump on head!

I am also a bug magnet and have tried a few things. The things that seems to work the best for me is a combination of Vitamin B pills - taken for about a month before each trip, Deet (over 25%) and skin so soft lotion. Yep, I'm weird, but I hate those buggers! And often on trips with others, I am the only I see with the bites - mine swell up into welts.

Last week I called the travel clinic at our local HMO and asked what they recommend. She said DEET, 25-50% (over that it doesn't really matter), and permethrin (spelling may be off) which is a spray you apply to your clothes and lasts through a few washings. Problem is, I am usually in my swimsuit and getting bit all around it!

I need to get some of that itch cream!
