Are they better/ worse this year?
Anything you can recommend to keep them at bay?

I was in STT a couple weeks ago, and the sand fleas came out around sunset, especially if you were on the beach. I have found Avon Skin-So-Soft to work as well as anything. At least it held off MOST of them.

The best way to keep them off of you is DEET or stay covered. I wear long PJ bottoms that are loose and a big button down long sleeve shirt. They are always in my beach bag, just in case. Some people have also had luck taking B-1 vitamins and/or garlic a few weeks before they come.

LOL
Garlic...that's right up Cellini55's alley. Now I won't have to worry about vampires either! Guess we're eating Italian on STJ.

I was there in May and they are about the same as they were in Oct.

I was there at the end of May and I must've been really attractive to them. I got very bitten up, but I'm not entirely sure if they were no-seeum or mosquitos bites. I didn't mind as much because I was in paradise, but absolutely everything I tried failed unfortunately. The masseuse I visited towards the end of our trip said that tea tree oil is great for relieving the itch and alleviating the allergic reaction to the bites (in case you have the same problem as I did). Sorry I couldn't be more help. 🙁

Lots of great ideas-thanks.
Like Aimee41 said...we'll be in Paradise so it won't really matter.
Especially if Chris at Work is eating the garlic as well...;)

Was just in the islands, staying our first week in Tortola, and our second on St. John, and the bartender on Tortola provided us a little Gin that we dabbed on our ankles, and low and behold that kept the little buggers at bay, guess they don't like Gin Martini's!

I've even tried it back here in New England and it really works, just don't drive as you may have a bit more of a "scent" on you and I don't think the officer would buy the excuse.....but IT REALLY WORKED.!(tu)

Stay in the water. Depending on the wind, you need to be at least 20' offshore.

Yep, gin works great but use the cheap stuff and don't waste the Bombay Sapphire.

STT:

I think the gin works only if you drink it.......then you won't notice the bites (LOL).

Mrs. F.I. tried the gin......doesn't work for her......we're still in search for a remedy.
