It depends on the weather. More rain = more bugs. Normally April is fairly dry. Bring some deet-based insect repellent and you'll be okay in any case.

A BIG NO to DEET based repellant - Deet is not a good thing for human body - Ginger use Avon Skin So Soft - we've discussed this.

Yes, Paul, we have discussed this but Skin So soft doesn't work for all of us! I will gladly poison my body with DEET if it means never having dengue again! Incidently, straight vodka rubbed on your skin also works if that's all that is around.

We are traveling to St. Thomas in April. We have three little one's. What is the story with Dengue Fever? Any way to protect the kids?

I am curious about the Dengue as well. Does the Bug and Sun Sunscreen work well? I am also coming with 3 kids (in June). The middle one gets eaten alive by mosquitos. Is June a wet month?

Urban Legands are begining to spring like mushrooms! I have visited th USVI eleven times in the last twelve years! The only time I have heard of dengue fever was reading this message board and the somewhat sensationalist book/"novel" "The Hot Zone" Take some Skin so Soft (Avon product) and if that doesn't work, and it most likely will...some product with a little DEET (a little goes a long way...keep away from all orifices eyes, nostrils, ears OK etc. This is less a problem in the USVI than in FL, AL, MS, NC, SC, and a great number of other places. You go to the islands not to worry...(about bugs), but rather to lose your worries about everyt'ing!

its no urban legend, just rare. in the 10 years i lived on st. thomas i caught dengue fever once, had a temperature of 104.7 before i went to the hospital. they told my parents i would either get better or die, there was nothing that could be done. obviously i got better =)

Ginger - they didn't get to you the last two times you were here and I believe you spent some time on the beach....so no worries. Whatever you did or did not do last time will work again.
