Has anyone night snorkeled at any of the beaches over St John? Which one would be best for this? We will be there this coming Saturday for a week and full moon is Sunday night so thought timing might be good. Do you wait till completely dark or go at dusk, any information would be appreciated.
Bobbi: When I snorkel at night on St Thomas I always get in at dusk so I can get my bearings. Also recommend the buddy system. On the night after the full moon, look for the "glowworms" in sandy, grassy areas. Homer Calloway does a guided snorkel tour of Hull Bay, don't know of night snorkel operators on St John.
thanks east ender for your reply. I guess not many people night snorkel, yours was the only reply. I have never done it before but heard there is so many neat things to see. Hadn't heard of glow worms before but will be on the watch for them. definitely will be doing this with a buddy! Going at dusk sounds like a good plan. thanks again
Ha, ha! Many are chicken to get into the briny sea at night with all the big eyed fishies!! I forgot to say: bring a light, but turn it off occasionally to see creatures that create their own light. The glow worm phenomenon is a spawning ritual of some marine worms related to the lunar cycle. Very cool and psychedelic! 🙂
Bobbi,
We did a night snorkel on St. John a number of years ago from a place in between Maho and on the way to Waterlemon. It was absolutely awesome and highly reccommend it. We left at dusk as we entered the water and had a small light which was more then adequate. I inquired last year and they do do them with a little notice. The place which knows all about them is a information booth in Mongoose Junction. They were very helpful and can direct you with all of the particulars.
Good Luck and let me know how you make out.
Maho Bay Camps (on St. John) does a regular schedule of night snorkels and you don't have to stay there to do them. I've only ever heard rave reviews.
