My relatives travel to caneel bay every feb and said a new resort is being built on the other end of st john is this true?? I'm trying to find a place to stay on the island this time next year with an 8 and 6 year old. Any recommendations appreatciated we are torn between the westin and caneel bay. My husband doesn't want to rent a villa because he wants to be on the beach and wants the kids to have activities.
Thanks

I don't know of any new resort on STJ but that doesn't mean there isn't one. If you want to go to Caneel you would need to check your travel dates with them because there used to be months during the year when young children were not welcome. Caneel costs a lot more than the Westin and has much better beaches than the Westin; the Westin has better kid activities.

don't know much about it but Pond Bay Club is under construction as are the new McCondo developments in Cruz Bay. The "no children" does not exist anymore at Caneel and they do have a excellent active and educational children's program, Turtle Town, located at Turtle Bay for kids 3 -12 and do excellent age appropriate activities - snorkel, windsail, do arts and crafts, explore the property identifying flora and fauna and focus on ecological education.

Anything being built on "the other end" of the island is years and years away. Probably talking about the marina that is being proposed for Coral Bay. Years and years away........

If you plan to spend most time at the resort and don't need a TV and a big pool, I'd go with Caneel since the beach at the Westin is just OK and doesn't compare to other island beaches. We stayed at the Westin with our two children (they were 12 and 8 years old) and they loved the it. It has a water trampoline, beautiful pool, iguana feedings, movies at night in the pool,... We stayed in a villa and rented directly from owners which was much more reasonable than going through the resort. They have 1,2 3 BR villas/condos. The 3 BR have their own pool, the others share private pools. The condos are a distance fromthe beach and pool which was never a problem for us and you can call for transport which is usually needed for the ride back to the condo. We rented a jeep and explored a new beach everyday. Then we'd come back and spend a few hours at the resort and go back out to Cruz Bay for dinner.

Hi,
When we were there in June we noticed the huge development on the side of the hill. When we mentioned it to some of the residents they were not happy about it and had tried to fight it. But money talks. It looked to me like it was well on it's way tosoon being completed - could be wrong though.
