Sorry if this subject has been discussed before, but I couldn't find it in a search of the site.

I've been reading about the new ferry dock in St. John. Where is it located in relation to the old dock? Is the process of getting on and off the ferry with a car easier now? Thanks in advance for any replies.

I misspoke in my previous message. I don't know when this change was made, (my previous post was based on what was told to me by Hertz at least several years ago), but from Hertz's website for regulations for STT rentals:

Current Location
Cyril E. King Airport
St. Thomas , US Virgin Islands

All cars must remain on island. No cars are allowed on any
ferry boat.

If a customer attempts to drive the vehicle off the island there is a fine of USD 1,000.00 and they will be subject to arrest.

I apologize!

We were going to rent a mini van in St. Thomas for my family of 5. Do you think it would be difficult to navigate on St. John with it? It seems more cost effective to use the car barge rather than pay for the passenger ferry and rent a car in St. John.

We rented from Budget this time and got 4WD. They will let you take it to STJ. It comes in handy in STJ if it rains as roads get very slick especially if you are going past Trunk Bay. Make sure the driver can back up a vehicle because you have to back onto the ferry to load the car.

Only bad thing we found with renting a jeep at the airport was they put a big amount of a hold on ur credit card until you bring the car back, where on STJ they dont put a hold on at all.

Hertz doesn't allow i,t as they have a franchise in STJ as well and feel it's counterproductive.

Sundays should be business as usual but one of the companies usually won't run on Sunday due to maintenance.

If you take one of the grey barges, Boyson, they take tickets only for their company, if you buy a round trip. The other two, although owned separately, do exchange tickets.

Boyson runs on the half hour starting from 6:30AM on the STT side to 6:30 PM. Roanoke leaves from STT at 6AM. Their last run from STJ is 7PM. Captain Vic leaves STJ at 6AM amd their last run from STT is 7PM. They are the ones who may not run on Sunday.

It should be slower on Sundays anyways, as the majority of the business during the week are supply trucks and construction crews. They cause quite a back up early mornings in STT and afternoons in STJ during the week.
