My husband and I visited St. Thomas for the first time in February when our cruise ship stopped for 7 hours. By the time we got off our boat and ate, etc. we only got to spend about 4 hours on the island. But we immediately fell in love! We really wanted to go get our luggage off the boat and stay there the rest of our vacation!
Anyways, we decided to go back for our 15 year anniversary this October and stay for 10-14 days. I have been on the internet reading and learning more about St. Thomas and trying to decide where to stay. I appreciated the post by GATRAVLR who is honeymooning there & wanting suggestions on things to do. That was a big help! So I thought I would ask about accomodations. Here is what we are thinking:

1.) We like privacy and would love to find a cottage on a beach somewhere. I haven't seen any places where you can literally walk out of your home and within a few hundred feet be at the beach. Do these places exist?? I have seen some resorts (high rise condos) that are close to the sand, but we don't really want the BIG over-crowded hotels. Are there any bed/breakfast's like this or small family owned properties? Or what about direct Owners who lease their own rentals? If there are no places like this, which condo/hotel do you like the best and why?

2.) We are also wondering about the drive time from the East End to Charlotte Amalie. If we stay on the East End & run out of things to do, I am worried about wanting to constantly drive back to Charlotte Amalie.

3.) Also, we were considering renting a motorcycle or fast scooter to travel around. What do you guys think? Is is rainy a lot in October? I am thinking we should just stick to renting a car?

I appreciate any and all suggestions!! THANKS SO MUCH!!!

I am going to suggest that you look up Water Island. It is a short 8 minute ferry ride from St.Thomas. There are so many places that you can stay. We have campgrounds, villa of all price ranges, and cottages. October is the month that activities start back up on Water Isalnd but it is still not over crowded. There is Friday night pizza at pirates ridge will all you can eat pizza & karoke, Heidis does a romantic candle lite dinner Saturdays on the beach, and Sundays at Joe's Beach Bar they do a pot luck dinner on the beach with live music 3pm-7pm. The island is so small that no matter where you stay the beach is never far. During the weekdays it is usually a quiet get away with great snorkeling and sun shine. Water Island is an amazing island please check it out on line. And if you choose to stay on St.Thomas make a beach day to check us out.

Sorry, my reply took so long. Water Island ferry is located at Crown Bay Marina outside of Tickles Restaurant & Bar. Bring your bathing suit, snorkel gear if you have it ( or call in advance), and drinks & food are cash only on the island ( no atm). The beach is a short walk from the ferry dock and people on the island are like family so if you would like a ride to the beach and back just ask. Like I said the beach has beautifull white clean sand, clear blue water, lounge chairs throughout, and a kyaks for anyone. Any assistant or other questions just call the owner of Joe's Beach Bar they are happy to answer your questions. (340) 690-1375 Melissa & Joe
