I'm looking at all avenues on my upcoming trip and am looking at which St. Thomas car rentals allow there rental cars over to St. John barge and how does this all work? What are the directions to the barge or is there more then one to choose from? Also, is there a grocery store on the way to barge? Not sure if I'm going this way but want to look at all options. Thanks

There are several ways to get across the island, some easier than others depending on traffic. If you have a late flight this option will not work because the barge does not run all night like the ferry.
The car rental company will give you directions and when you get to the barge dock, you wait for the next barge, back on and pay your fare.

If you go to the STJ tab at the top of the page, the getting there will give you information on prices.

Depending on which route you take you may pass a store.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to renting on STT vs. renting on STJ. I prefer renting on STJ.

With all due respect, this question has been hashed and rehashed ad nausea on this forum. If you use the search engine on this forum you'll find everything answered.

The only car rental agency which does NOT allow their vehicles to go on the car barge to STJ is Hertz. The current ferry schedules are at the top of this page, Quick links, ferry schedules. That easy!

Grocery stores en route? Just two main routes to get to Red Hook and the car barge, six of one and half a dozen of the other where time and distance is concerned but my preference shopping is between CostULess and Plaza Xtra,

I understand from whence you're coming but using the search engine on this forum can provide you with an abundance of up to date information. Cheers!

I wonder now that since Hertz no longer has a franchise in St John(as seen on another forum), will they still prevent the taking of Hertz cars over?

Good question Ronny!

Ahh yes, same questions over and over, but isn't that what we are here for? Yes, doing a search helps, but we wouldn't need a forum if it weren't for the questions! Giving helpful links to the answers is more helpful than reprimanding the writer asking.

Sorry don't mean to keep asking so many questions but I'm going alone for first time and want to make good informed decisions and not familiar with this site. I will investigate more and only ask if I cant find my answers.

You just need to keep one thread open on the subject rather than starting another. You have five on car rentals alone. There are off airport rental agencies that rent for less money. You wanted one at the airport. Now you have decided to rent in STJ. Most others have found it to be cheaper the STT way. Maybe not the franchise way. Enjoy!

I decided to just rent from St. john is that the airport is way to expensive and either take a taxi to a off site car rental place or hope they are there to get you when you get off the plane. After looking into it, it seems to much like a pain so I just decided to get a rental with my villa agent when I get off the ferry. Sorry about all the posts I will try not to ask many more questions. I will do more of my own investigating of future questions. Sorry again....:-)

No, I just meant it was no problem keeping them in the same thread. We go back and read them as long as there are new posts. No need to be redundant. The off site agencies pick you up. The only one that that is questionable, in my experience, is the Dollar/Thrifty Company.

Hertz does have an outlet on St. John, at the Caneel Bay resort, I believe. When I called to inquire about a car for our upcoming visit, all their vehicles were already reserved. This was just a couple weeks ago.

Well, here is the scenario from another forum:

Post 1:Just a FYI....I just tired to make reservations through Hertz's website for the Caneel Bay location. I was working last week when I checked prices for June, however it now says this location is permanently closed. If you check for rentals for this month it says please contact location for reservations. Just wanted everyone to be aware.

Post 2: Are you sure it is closed or that you must book directly thru Paris @ Caneel?

Caneel's website still has it listed as available in their info and no additional info on press room page .

I think I would call PAris or Caneel directly, and not trust the Hertz website. I found this in my saved Caneel info:

"Please contact Hertz office on property. The number is 340 776 6111 extension 7044 and the representative will be happy to assist you."

Post 3: Dated April 4th: They are out of business. We just returned from island today. We had booked a car for last Tuesday through Hertz only to find out that they had up and left 2 days prior, on Sunday. Caneel did call Verlack car co. which had a driver come pick us up 15 minutes later, take us to town, and rent the car for the two days. They were extremely nice, no problems what-so-ever. Make other arrangements if you were to rent with Paris/Hertz so you won't run into problems during the upcoming busy week.

I have not checked personally. Will do next visit to STJ but it looks real to me.

Is that the Paris as in Paris rental car no longer in operation? Should I be concerned about not having a vehicle if we reserved with these guys next month???
