Hey,
I am doing an internship here for the summer. I was planning on getting around by taxi bus for the summer, but my experience already has proven that to be pretty unsafe. I don't have a lot of money in my budget for transportation, but does anyone know of someone with a car they would sell for a fairly cheap price or anyone with a car they'd be willing to rent out?
Thanks,
Steve

Stevetheintern, congratulations! I'm sure you're very excited. You may find very helpful information regarding transportation on the other message board (Relocation) on this site. click on the link, top right of this page. Post your question there.

Taxi travel isn't unsafe, it's just unreliable.

Waiting and looking for taxis has proven itself to be very unsafe. A number of the drivers have also told me that a number of them have been robbed and a coupled have been killed.

Really? I am not sure that the information that you were given is true.

Stevetheintern, the facts are
o taxis can be cost prohibitive to rely on them for transportation everywhere you go, whenever you want to go.
o many local residents depend on "dollar" taxis or "safaris" to get them to/from work and school.
o VITRAN (public bus transportation) are used by local residents for transportation to/from work, school and "other" though there are more dollar taxis running around than VITRAN buses.

Regarding safety, I've never had a problem with safety and I certainly do not understand the alarmist statement of "a number of them have been robbed and a couple have been killed". Here's a life tip for anywhere you go, anywhere in the world: Don't put yourself in situations where bad things happen. (e.g., drug transactions, overindulging in anything including drinking, drugs, and other activities that would set you up as a vulnerable target for unscrupulous people).

Finally, you should jump over to the Relocation Message Board and start up a conversation with local residents since it sounds like you're planning to make one of the USVI islands a waypoint on your life's journey.

Hello FL Barrier Island,
I do not do drugs and have not been apart of any drug transactions. I am in my 20s and do not think there is anything wrong with wanting to be able to go out and enjoy myself responsibly without having to worry about being robbed or getting home safely. I have personally had an incident where I was trying to get a taxi home and I was about to be robbed until I had the good fortune of a pole officer driving by and giving me a ride home.
I have spoken with a number of taxi bus drivers and all of them have told me without any qualifications that they refuse to work after dark because of the safety issues others have had while trying to work.

stevetheintern, I'm not sure what a "taxi bus" is......do you mean "dollar taxi".....but I'm sorry for your bad experiences. If you provide the name of the island you're living on maybe someone on the board can refer you to a taxi driver they trust that you can call in advance and you can arrange a time and location to be picked up - until you're able to secure an island car. Good luck to you!

I apologize. I thought I already replied and said I am on St. Croix. I am pretty new to message boards.
