I just returned from staying in STX for 7days! LOVED it! I am not a "night person" so I did not do the bar scene. I am a "day person' and got up early every morning to explore the island. Stayed at Hotel on the Cay which was great because I did not have a car till the last day. Ate at the Bombay club, Angry Nates and Paradise Cafe. It was great.-- good food, friendly service! Took Big Beard's out to buck island and that was a blast! Also took the jet ski out to the EAST END and that was great fun too. Last day rented a car and drove to F'sted and then to the EAST end. Casino was no big deal but the scenery on the road is to die for. Houses there are beautiful! Reef Beach is pretty and Gallows Bay was interesting.

I remember when I lived there 25 years ago I was a big drinker and stayed out till all hours of the night. The music, the dancing and the night people were so much fun back then. But now I really feel like I missed so much of the "day scene" by doing that. There really is nothing but trouble after midnight. At least in my experience. I love STX and want to live there again, as a total "day person" though. There is sooooooooo much to see during the day

Other than seeing things in the daylight, I'm curious to know what changes you have found after 25 years. This must have been a special trip. Did you get to reacquaint with people who you knew 25 years ago?

I showed old pics to those who remembered the years back. Many of the people I knew had moved on to other islands and I did not get to do all the stuff i wanted because of the NO CAR situation...but the crime seemed to be on the low, especially since I was not out at night. I did not find the locals to be as aggressive as I remember them. The whole island seemed 'friendlier" than when I was living there. F'sted is MUCH bigger than it used to be.
I would FOR SURE say that you are safe during the day! I remember being scared to walk home to CASA LOCO after work and running there. I needed a car at night, back then, even for a very short walk

I lived on St Croix in the early 70's as a teenager and it took me 29 years to make it back. The main change I noticed about the island was the increase in cars! Wow. Our plane landed after 3 and by the time we got our car and headed out east the traffic was brutal, especially around Sunny Isle. Also noticed how many small businesses had been built all along Centerline, especially around the Sunny Isle area. The road you turn off Centerline that runs by Sunny Isle used to be called Peppertree Road and it was practically a rural road compared to how it is now! Of course all the new homes that have been built all over the island were amazing to see. Queens Quarter has some huge homes built in it now compared to 1970. Also when you hit the east end road it used to be practically deserted with a home here and there-- now there are so many nice homes. Downtown Christiansted looks so much the same except back in the 70's there were many more shops and many more tourists. Caravelle Arcade and Pan Am Pavilion were full of shops. There were many shops all along the other main streets downtown, too, that I miss. Sun and Moon, Nini's of Scandinavia,The (two) Mahoney shops, Cavanaughs,Sparkeys, Little Switzerland, Continental, The Omega Shop, Wadsworths, Ginger Thomas,Compass Rose... sigh, so many good days of shopping! (but I've really enjoyed exploring all the new shops that are there now!) It was sad to see the Comanche so decrepit! That was THE lunch place downtown. Also missed Cafe de Paris. And the Stone Balloon. It was also sad to see the hurricane damage from Hugo and Marilyn. St. Croix by the Sea was a very popular place in the 70's. We used to dress up in our long islandy skirts and enjoy steak night on Friday nights and dance to Wesley Thomas's combo at the restaurant by the sea, then walk around their huge ocean side pool--- very romantic! Also Pelican Cove (now called the Palms) had a huge Sat night buffet with a steel drum group that we danced to. All this was more formal than today, with the men in dinner jackets and women in long island dresses or dressier short dresses. 'Condo Row' wasn't condo row back then certainly! Such a shame to see that happen. One of the prettiest beaches on the island in my opinion. I noticed so many improvements, though, when I came back. The level in living for the island people seems to be the most different. It's funny for me to read the complaints on this message board by some people (and I certainly understand where you're coming from), but when we moved to the island Sunny Isle was just being built, there was only the Pueblo in Golden Rock to shop, many roads weren't paved, we received two tv stations, had no phones (at least in the two areas we lived), and the airport was this rickety open air type thing. Electricity went off every other day! But we LOVED the island and were so excited to be able to go back. As much as some things did change, it was amazing how much the island is still the same! After a week it was as if I'd never left. Sorry to bore all you too young to remember the places I'm talking about--- but you 'old timers' may remember and enjoy a trip down memory lane.*-)

Excellent trip down memory lane - Thank You - I used to sail over from STT quite often to enjoy the Christiansted scene and tour the big island - haven't been back since Hugo.

That was great! I lived on StX in 1980, and that brought back memories!
