Moving to USVI a good idea?

My girlfriend and I are in our mid 20's and are considering moving to USVI. We both have degrees, but don't necessarily want to cater to tourists. Is there a lot of work outside the tourism industry. Is there ever an uncrouded beach? Do locals travel frequently between islands? Are there water taxis with a regular schedule where one may be able to live on a different island than they work? Thanks for any words of advice.
